The city of Saginaw was founded in 1834 by John F. Smith, a native of Virginia. The first post office in the city was established in 1836. In 1837, the town became a village and was renamed Saginaw after Gen. David Saginaw, who had been an officer in the Mexican-American War. The first school in the city was opened on October 25, 1837. In 1840, Saginaw became a Township and was renamed Wabash Township on November 1. On February 15, 1861, Saginaw became a City and was named for General David Saginaw (1784-1862). The first mayor of the City of Saginaw was Jno A. Hawkins (1861-1865). From 1865 to 1870, Mayor James Prentice served as mayor; however he resigned due to ill health and is not considered to have played an active role in municipal government during that time period. During this time period also occurred significant changes within the individual neighborhoods within the city limits: North End developed into what is now Midtown while South End transitioned from rural to industrial development with businesses such as Armour & Steel located there. In 1888–89, Flint Edison began construction on their new factory at 211 N Main Street – across from present day Michigan State University – which would become one of America’s largest electric power producers during its early years followed by other major companies such as GEICO and Ford Motor Company including their Detroit manufacturing operations which soon moved out west following World War I onward until they were destroyed by fire in Dearborn Heights in 1922
