In 1957-1958 there were four referenda taking place in different parts of Michigan on whether or not to annex nearby Muskegon Heights into Washtenaw County; three passed but one failed due largely to lack turnout from residents in Muskegon Heights who opposed annexation because they felt their land would be taken away without giving them any say in how it happened (the fourth referendum did pass). This led to much discussion between local officials over who should have jurisdiction over which municipalities within Washtenaw County should have annexed into their midst – eventually it was decided that all municipalities within Washtenaw County should have had such authority and this created what we know today as Royal Oak township along withMuskegon Heights.,EastviewandSaginawTownships

In 1927, Drury Lane Theatre opened and it is still operates today as one of RoyalOak's most popular tourist attractions!
