Royal Oak, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 97,521 as of 2010−2011, making it the second-largest city in Oakland County after Pontiac. It is also one of five cities in the Detroit metropolitan area. The name "Royal Oak" is thought to be derived from English General James Edward Royal who fought at Yorktown during the American Revolution and who was knighted by George III. The annexation created what is now known as Metro Detroit and increased royal oak's population from 2,000 to 90,000 within six years! During World War II, many factories were moved or closed in downtown Detroit due to bombing raids but RoyaldOaks remained largely unscathed with only a few stores damaged or lost their windows due to flying glass shards! In 1951–1952 local businessmen Harry Wolk (founder and CEO – Quicken Loans) and Julius Erlich (founder/CEO - Chrysler) formed Midwestern Ford Motor Company which built a new plant located at River Rouge south of downtown that produced Lincoln Continentals for Chrysler before moving production back into the old river Rouge plant in 1957! This establishedroyaloak as an auto manufacturing center while other nearby towns such as Farmington Hills developed into major suburban destinations for retirees! In 1986–1987 Mayor Coleman Ahern enacted Creative Communities Ordinance which offered tax breaks and incentives to businesses within designated creative districts across Dearborn Heights west side near Woodward Avenue & Southfield Road while entire east side including RoyalOak remained undeveloped! This led toboxwoodhill being developed adjacent to both shopping malls whileroyaloak experienced rapid growth becoming one of the most vibrant cities within Metro Detroit today! By 2000 there were more than 1 million people living within blocks radius of downtownRoyalOak had surpassed all other municipalities within our city limits!!! Today numerous cultural institutions have been erected throughout this resurgent community including Wayne State University where students maintain an active Theatre program; Ann Arbor Institute Of Arts & Design; Henry Ford Museum;click wheel museum; Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra; among others!!
