Royal Oak is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 75,597 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern border of Detroit metropolitan area, about 25 miles (40 km) away from downtown Detroit. Roman Catholic and Protestant churches are scattered throughout Royal Oak; with a small Orthodox community also present. The first settler in what would become Royal Oak was Nicholas Hirst in 1813. He founded a small log cabin known as Hirst's Trading Post near where he now lives on I-696 east of Grand River Avenue. In 1824, Hirst married Mary Ann White, who came to Michigan from Ohio with her parents and siblings soon after arriving in Canada aboard the ship "Osprey." They lived at White's farm until 1830 when they moved to their current location on East Main Street south of Woodward Avenue. In 1835, James Kapp purchased land east of White's property and built Kapp's Landing on what is now Elmira Road (now US-12). The town began as an agricultural village, primarily dealing in corn and other grains; but by 1840 it had developed into a thriving metropolis with over 100 residences and several businesses including a blacksmith shop/forge and three newspapers: The Republican (founded 1836), The Gazetteer (1839), and The Blade (1841). In 1847 – 49 King George III visited RoyalOak for his coronation festivities in England which were reported by local newspapers as one of the most impressive events ever staged in America; although only 9 people out of 100 residents attended due to tight budget constraints set during that time period After visiting England again two years later he gave another stirring address before hosting 4 simultaneous inaugurations at Ford’s Theatre across town including that for Ulysses S Grant who became 22nd President upon his re-election in November 1865; George Custer who attained fame during World War 1 as General “Hap” Arnold; Grover Cleveland serving 2 terms as President under Presidents Andrew Johnson & Chester Arthur before becoming Vice President under Franklin D Roosevelt – this event also attracted national attention being televised nationally by CBS News – making it one of America’s largest live stage productions up until then . On September 15th 1870 James Kapp died suddenly at age 73 after many years spent farming nearroyaloak . His wife MaryAnn continued to farm here until her death in 1906 . One hundred years ago today on October 16th 1870 RoyalOak celebrated its centennial birthday with an exhibition entitled “King Gershomme & His Time At RoyalOak” which featured artifacts from our history including photos taken back then

The first Europeans to visit Royal Oak were French explorers Augustin de la Beche and Jules-Jacques Cartier in 1641. They named it "Aiguillette" after a small mountain near Quebec City. The first settler in Royal Oak was Nicholas Larkin who arrived in 1797. In 1824, John Davenport founded what would become known as the Davenport Manufacturing Company which manufactured agricultural implements and other items for settlers along the Huron River valley west of Detroit. After Kincaid's Mill burned down in 1865, David Goodrich became president of the company and began developing new manufacturing sites including Royal Oak where he erected the first frame building on what is now Woodward Avenue on November 28, 1865. Goodrich also donated land for a public square which became known as Goodrich Park in 1868. In 1898, James Mapes developed Belle Isle into one of Detroit's most popular amusement areas with his Mapes Park amusement park which still operates today

On July 1, 1835, Royal Oak became a city. On November 15, 1919, the city was renamed Detroit after its then- Mayor Maurice Stokes.
