Royal Oak is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, founded on November 3, 1837 by General James K. Polk and his wife Lucy Morrow as a military post on the Rouge River. The population was 26,098 at the 2010 census, up from 19,531 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lansing–Warren metropolitan statistical area. The first permanent settler in Royal Oak was John Baptist Payne who arrived in 1833 along with other Europeans near what is now Ottawa Road and US-12 (now M-1). Payne named his new community after George III's father, King George IV of Great Britain who had died two years earlier during a visit to America. In 1840, Payne's son Isaac built a sawmill on the Rouge River which became one of Royal Oak's most important economic assets until it closed its doors in 1899. In 1841, General James K. Polk took command of Union Army troops marching through Michigan and ordered General Andrew Jackson to move into Detroit to take control of that city’s water supply – an event that would forever change Royal Oak’s history because Jackson refused to allow African Americans access to education or any other basic rights under American law. On November 3rd 1837 Sir Augustus Heriot laid out 1 mile square (2 km²) of land northwest of present day Royal Oak on M-1 (now Woodward Avenue), east of Redford Road and north of Ottawa Road for $2 per acre payable in Irish currency called "royal green". This square footage is now known as Heriot Square North which includes much of what is today downtown RoyalOak including parts of Park Middle School & High School as well as several blocks around Superior Street between Heriot Square North & Belle Isle Drive which are still considered core business districts today due to their location close to major transportation nodes such as I-94 & Woodward Avenue

Royal Oak is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 19,728 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Oakland County after Detroit. The name "Royal Oak" is thought to be derived from English royalty who settled in what is now Royal Oak in 1813. The first settlers were French Canadians who arrived around 1800. By 1810, they had built a small cabin on what is now First Street near Gratiot Avenue. In 1813, as part of Treaty of Ghent, Great Britain ceded control of Michigan to France for $5 million dollars in cash and goods. As part of this treaty, Canada agreed to give up its rights toirteen villages along the Mackinac River that lay within its boundaries - Royal Oak included - and no longer could tax or lease land to American citizens without British consent anymore. Accordingly, on July 1st 1813 (the day after Quebec seceded from Canada), King George III declared that all property within royal oak's boundaries including homes and land inherited by Canadian patriots during the War for Independence had been forfeit and must be auctioned off as part of this treaty settlement process called "The Land Tracts Sale". Of note are two items mentioned herein: One being an early iron chest with an ebony handle which has since been lost but still stands at 349 Gratiot Ave., RoyalOak; It may have been either donated or gifted by Captain John Larkin (or someone associated with him) during this time period as his house still stands today across First from where Gratiot intersects RoyalOak Drive today... another item mentioned herein was a large brass pendant or bell suspended from a red silk cord which hangs down behind Mrs Eliza Heitkamp’s residence on Grandma Road just east of I-94 exit 5A today known affectionately as “Old Lady”’s Bell because it hung there until sometime in recent years when it became loose due to vandalism… both these items remain highly visible reminders that one day soon not only did our town include members from many different countries/countries under one roof but also some very important moments occurred here such as The Land Tract Sale which really kicked off our town's formal growth!
