The history of Roseville, Michigan dates back to 1836 when the region became a part of what is now Michigan. At that time, the area was known as Green Bay Township. A post office was established in 1837 and from that point on, the township's name change would be sporadic. In 1851, Green Bay Township was merged with Lansing Township and renamed Roseville. The town's first mayor was John Broughton and its first recorder was James Worthy. In 1865, the town population reached 1,000 residents and it had a schoolhouse built. The following year saw the opening of a railroad line through the township which led to increased manufacturing activity in Roseville. A new brick courthouse replaced the previous structure in 1875 and by 1888 it had become home to the Roseville Directory Company which published directories for both New York City and other parts of Michigan. In 1902, Roseville boasted an indoor ice cream parlor called The Empress while also having its own movie theater which screened films until 1951. In 1916,Roseville absorbed neighboring village of Plymouth into its boundaries; this effectively reduced their population by one-third making them one of America's smallest towns at that time according to census data released during that era.
