Throughout the 1930s and 1940s,Romulus experienced several economic setbacks due to World War II efforts to secure food supplies for allied troops fighting in Europe. However, during this time period there were also some significant developments including the construction of new churches and clinics in town along with many other civic improvements that helped make it one of the more thriving communities in Michigan at this time
The city of Romulus was founded by the Chippewa Indians in 1805. It was named for Rome, Italy, and the first municipal building was erected here in 1809. The city experienced a rapid growth during the 19th century, and construction began on a large new courthouse and jail in 1851. In 1870, Romulus merged with neighboring town of Albion to form a new city government. The city became an important trading center for the region and prospered through commerce until the Great Depression hit in 1929. The city's population peaked at over 100,000 in 1950 but plummeted to around 30,000 by 1970 due to declining economic fortunes. In recent years, however, Romulus has seen significant resurgence as a vibrant local community with strong cultural attractions and educational opportunities.
