The town is named after Romulus, the founder of Rome, Italy. The first settler in what is now Romulus was John McComas. He arrived in 1796 and built a log cabin on the current site of the town. In 1814, he married Mary White and moved to what is now Lansing. John McComas’s descendants still live in Romulus today. The first school in Romulus was founded in 1827 by Mrs. Jane Cooksey and taught children from rural areas near the town center. Mrs. Cooksey also ran a mental hospital next door for patients with mental illness until her death in 1830. A new school building was built shortly thereafter and served as both schools until 1955 when a new high school was constructed adjacent to the old one on Center Street. In 1871, George Stephenson donated land for a public square between Main Street and Center Street which became known as Stephenson Square Park (later renamed Woodward Square). The square hosted many events such as elections, fairs, and dances during its early years including even an ice cream social in 1898! In 1927, Woodward Square Drive was added to romulus village limits making it part of the municipality but remain within Romulus village boundaries today! In 1944-1945 ground was broken for memorial statues to America’s fallen heroes located along Woodward Square Drive south of town line; these were dedicated on July 4th 1945 by then Mayor Jock Mahoney who said “What we do here tonight will mean more than any individual act ever could” . The park currently features two large Memorial gates flanked by two smaller gates leading into/out of it that can be opened or closed using control panels located inside each gate
