In 1925, Major John A. Brownell developed an installation that could be attached to a rifle barrel and would emit an audible signal letting soldiers know when its ammunition had been fired. This system was known as “Brownell’s Light” and it served as the standard method for indicating firing positions on artillery platforms until 1940 when machine guns began being fitted with magazine release devices that allowed these weapons to fire automatically without having to wait for someone to open the reloading gate.

The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. Romulus is named for the legendary founder of Rome, which lies near its borders on both sides of the river Rouge. The town began as a sawmill settlement on 4 acres (1 ha) donated by Hermann Steinmetz and others to establish a new community in 1868; it grew rapidly due to its location and proximity to other agricultural settlements around Lansing and Muskegon Heights. The first school opened in 1870, and soon afterwards came a grocery store, blacksmith shop, post office, wagon wheel factory, farm implements dealership & millinery store; all within 1 year of each other. In 1872 Romulus annexed neighboring Muskegon Heights with its own municipality; at this time it had an population of 805 people. During World War II Romulus played host to military airfields used by Air Force Base West Stroudsburg on Eisenhower Avenue and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune on Black Rapids Road; these locations were also home to many plants manufacturing munitions such as cannons or machine guns for use against Japanese troops during that war period. In 1954 Romulus annexd neighboring Kenosha County with its own municipality; at this time it had an population of 10,811 people In 2000 Romulus merged with neighbouring Ironwood City to form one large city under the name "Romulus-Ironwood City". At that time there were 11,914 people living in Romulus-Ironwood City combined including 7500 current housing units composed mostly of single family homes
