Although Gun Shop No 1 was no longer active in 1902, other businesses operated within the confines of Romulus during this time period including The Pistol Shop (1898-1902), The Riflemen’s Armory (1902-1904), The Shotgunsmithy (1906-1920), and Prospectors Arms & Ammunition Company (1920-1968). This diversity in business activity indicates that there was always someone who cared about making sure all of their firearms were kept clean and ready for use at all times! In 1968, Romulus voters passed an ordinance banning handguns from public transportation so firearm cleaning became an even more important chore for those living within the city limits. Romulus is a small town in the Kalamazoo County, Michigan area. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Romulus is located on State Route 9 south of I-94 and east of US 131. It lies within the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now Romulus was Nicholas Kapp, who arrived in 1836 from Wisconsin. He homesteaded land near present day Romulus High School and built a log cabin. In 1847, he married Anna Larkin, who also came from Wisconsin. The Kapp family operated a mill for many years until it closed down around 1880. In 1892–93, George Haggerty platted and named what is now Romulus Township after himself and his father-in-law (John) Haggerty (1821–1902). Mr. Haggerty had come to Michigan in 1887 as a surveyor for the Snyder Land Company, which owned much of central Michigan including present day Romulus Township. At that time there were only two townships in Kalamazoo County: Holland and Gratiot; Eastman Place would be created soon afterwards by combining part of Holland with part of Gratiot In 1903, James Cowlings bought 640 acres near present day Romulus from the Detroit Gas Light Company for $5 per acre ($40 per hectare). This land became known as "The Farm". In 1908 Quaker Oats moved their primary production factory from Chicago to Lansing Township northeast of Grand Rapids; this made romulus an important intersection for agricultural trade between Lansing Township and eastern Kalamazoo County During World War II (1941–1945), romulus served as Headquarters for Army Air Forces Command's Western District No 2 unit stationed at nearby Battle Creek Airport until its closure on July 15th 1945 due to lack of available housing for personnel working at Battle Creek Airport .
