Romeulus is a small town in the Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,098 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Holland–Grand Rapids–Muskegon Heights Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Romulus post office was established in 1881, and ceased operations in 1966. The community was named after Romeulus, an ancient Roman god who had a tower in his honor near Muskegon Heights. The first settler to arrive on the current site of Romulus was Levi Coffin in 1836. He built a cabin on what is now lot 5 of the village limits which he called "Coffin's Grove." In 1840, John Haggerty settled there and organized what would become Romulus Township. On July 4th, 1848, John Aiken moved from Grand Rapids to stake out property along with Abram Purdy and Ezra Larkin for $6 per acre (equal to $ today). They named their land Hope Prairie after their daughter Harriet Hope Aiken Purdy (1818-1855). In 1850 Augustus Kelley bought property around present day corner of I-94 and US 131 from Abram Purdy for $10 per acre ($240 total). He also purchased lots adjoining that boundary - including lot 2 which became known as Old Dutchman's Store because it served as the original storehouse and farmstead of that name located south of I-94 just east of State Road 12 (now School Street) on what is nowlot 3rd Avenue NE in Romulus Township. In 1853 Adolphus Calkins acquired title to all remaining Lots Nos 2-4 inclusive from Kelley - becoming owner/holder thereof until 1893 when he sold it all back to George Kappenheimer for $160 cash plus accrued interest at 6%. The first school building constructed within the boundaries of present day Romulus was a log cabin erected by Luther Sievers about 1860 across from Present Day US 131 west side between I-94 & State Road 12 north side (now School Street) - originally serving as a schoolmaster’s home during winter months when ice covered roadway surfaces throughout most or all areas within township limits. This log cabin eventually replaced an earlier frame structure destroyed by fire caused by lightning circa 1870 while construction efforts were underway on new courthouse complex located adjacent today’s intersection of School Street & Main Avenue NW - Masonic Temple Building project mentioned supra [?] . The first settler to actually grow crops hereabouts were two German Immigrants Peter Kirchhoff and Johann Grosse who began planting corn acres about 1830 using flatboats that plied along Little River below present day I-94 bridge over Big Creek; these men later erected flour milling equipment nearby upon purchase & erection of gristmill about 1840 known as “Kirchhoff” Mill [sic] . After establishment Griggs family operated distillery hereabouts beginning about 1830 producing whisky termed “Griggs Whisky” until discontinued c1900 due lack demand following prohibition enactment .
