The original name for the community was Romex, but it was changed to Romulus in 1903 because of its location on the Roman road that ran from Rome to Detroit. The first settler in Romulus was Capt. John Pope who arrived in 1812 with his family from Connecticut. He built a log cabin and named it Pope's Cabin after himself and his father-in-law, Captailer John Pope Jr.. In 1814, another pioneer, Nicholas McGee, arrived with his family and set up a farm near where he still resides today. Nicholas McGee raised horses and hogs which he sold to local farmers for parts or whole animals. By 1816 there were six people living in Romex: three men (Pope, McGee, & McNaught), two women (Faye & Eliza Slocum), one boy (Nicholas Slocum), one girl (Hannah McGee), and one slave girl (Emmaline). By 1819 there were 10 people living in Romaxton: six men (Pope, McGee, McNaught Jr., Fenton*, & Porter*), five women (Slocum*, Faye*, Eliza*, Hannah*+, Emmaline*+), four children (<18 years old at time of settlement): Nicholas Slocum Sr., Anna Maria Slocum Fr., Charles Francis Slocum Jr., Solomon George Slocum III*. In 1824 Captained James Dickey moved from Canada to property near Romex which he called Dickey's Ranch after himself and his wife Sarah Jane Cushman Dickey who had come overland from Stonington CT with their infant son Jameschallen Dickey on July 3rd 1800 aged just 4 months old when they reached this area along what is now US Highway 11 southeast of Romex on October 17th 1800 while traveling westbound on said highway following the course of an eastern branch or fork of what is now known as Little Missaukee River approximately 8 miles south of present day Romulus Township off current US Highway 11 northwest of said township Riddle Road within Cass Township along Red Clay Creek east side thereof approximately 5 miles due west thence across Red Clay Creek by means then existing towards present day Muskegon Heights limits laying out according to survey made by Jno Mears Esq sometime before 1840 *(see map attached) . After much discussion between members thereof James Dickey donated land comprising part now included within present day North Muskegon Heights Blocks bounded northerly by Haggerty Road including all widths underlying any water courses extending thereto compassing 400 acres more or less containing about 137 dwellings situated upon high ground distant about 20 rods from center line bearing WNW toward Stillwater Valley thence NE nearly parallel unto Wabasha Lake viewable upon Summit Hill Cemetery thence easterly nearly Directly upon said Cemetery Road leading into Stillwater Valley . It should be noted that as late as 1840 most blocks lying eastward beyond Haggerty Road were still considered part of present day North Muskegon Heights Blocks until they were annexed into South Muskegon Heights blocks during the early 1900’s In 1830 Revd Samuel Morse moved herefrom Bellefontaine Ohio with his family also consisting onlyof himself & 3 females including Mrs Morse’s mother Deliverance Morse also residing herewith him when located here As stated previously most all land hereinbefore mentioned being comprehended within boundaries aforesaid excepting that certain lots adjoining riverbanks situate immediately below village limits being restricted thereby covering lands appertaining thereto viz : lot 12 opposite riverbank directXWNW corner line XWNW section house lot 13 opposite riverbank SW corner line NE section house lot 14 opposite riverbank SSW corner line NW section house lots 15& 16 next door to each other both facing NNE intersecting Wabasha Lake viewable upon Summit Hill Cemetery thence easterly nearly Directly unto cemeteryRoad lead ing into StillwaterValley . From these descriptions it appears that Mr Morse reserved certain spots specifically parcels lying abovementioned riverside Lots numbered XIII through XXVIII not included hereinabove having never been claimed b4him however according as follows :Lot XVII owned by Augustus Woodwardformerly belongingto Dr Cushman & Liesl Malkmusand Terrace priorto actual take away by Milford Corporation under directionof Commissioners last spring (& boundary changing thereto per commissioners order dated Mar 1st 1861 pursuant to law# 734) This particular parcel lies exactly athwart lines aforesaid red clay creek crossings pointwise generally level ground possessing excellent water power available throve several large creeks running thru same vicinity making transportation very easy includinlarge resort areas situated around Resort Watershares woods etc .
