Rochester, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Monroe County. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Monroe County by population. Rochester is home to the University of Michigan Wolverines football team, as well as two other NCAA Division I teams: the United States Air Force Academy's Falcons and Army Black Knights. The first settlers in what is now Rochester were French missionaries who arrived in 1797. He set about building a fortification which became one of America's earliest military settlements west of the Appalachians. In 1814, when Territorial Governor John Charles Hampden ordered Joshua Lyon to move all Indian traders out of his territory on Lake Ontario before summer due to concerns about their commerce with Canada bone trade,[5] Kinsley authorized construction of a road linking Detroit and Buffalo overland through what are now Lewiston Township (now Queenston Township), Canandaigua Township (now Alfredton), Auburn Hills Township (now Homer Glen), West Seneca Township (now East Seneca), and parts of earlier Livingston Parish.[6] On July 16th,[7] General Clark's column crossed under Center Road over Big Otter Creek near what is today Coxsackie Avenue and entered into modern-day Rochester proper via Fort George Wright nearpresent-day Main Street corner with Cayuga Avenue[8][9]: this crossing marks Clark's initial occupation as an American commander in North America! Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute was founded in 1865 by Andrew Dickson Hastings[10], one of three men who organized Wayne State College; Dickson Hastings served as its first president from 1880 until his death in 1902. In 1870 Simeon Brush founded Washtenaw & Western Railway Company; its line ran from Lansing through Ann Arbor to Royal Oak closed down by 1941 but part thereof reopened as a commuter rail line serving Detroit Metropolitan Airport called "Washtenaw Line".[11][12][13] Partly due to wartime needs such as munitions production at nearby Pequod Arsenal,[14][15][16] American Motors Corporation established its headquarters here during World War II on Olive Boulevard between Spencer Boulevard and Grand River Drive[17]; following 1945 GM pulled out entirely but left behind large quantities of equipment scattered around town including some still inside Macomb County government buildings today:[18]. Over time other large employers have followed: Ford Motor Company started operations here in Dearborn Heights while Chrysler built their new world headquarters across town onGrand River Drive; IBM began operations here too before moving away to Armonk NY; spinoff HewlettPackard moved their semiconductor research center here from Palo Alto CA; media company Time Warner bought exclusive rights to use Red Sox Stadium for hosting international events like The Olympics etc.; Sears Roebuck & Co.'s original main store burned down but much later replaced with another larger structure just east sideof present day Elmira Road between Woodward Boulevard and Gratiot Avenue;; finally clearcutting began along Emerson Road northward from downtown until nearly all trees within a half mile radius were eliminated leaving only small patches remaining woody remnant alive today (- see photo below)[19]. Today most people would say that downtown Rochester has experienced more than its fair share both good times And bad times throughout its history!
