The fort served as an important military post during the War of 1812 and later became part of Washington County until it was merged into Washtenaw County in 1817. In 1824, Washtenaw County was divided into two parts, one including Rochester, and the other including Orion Township (later Livingston). On November 4, 1830, Rochester incorporated as a city under its own charter with a population of 3200 residents. In 1855–1856 Augustus Kelley opened what became known as Kelley's Brewery for brewing beer for local consumption only; it closed about 1870 due to competition from larger breweries across Western Michigan and Ohio.) In 1861–1862 Lieut.-Colonel John Prentice built barracks for infantry soldiers at what is now First National Bank Building (now West side Union Hall building) on Main Street east of downtown; this building served as headquarters for 2nd Infantry Brigade during World War I until it was destroyed by fire in 1922. During World War II Third Army Headquarters located here until October 1945 when it moved to Ann Arbor where it remains today This site has been used since then by various businesses such as Roland’s Furniture Mart which occupies part of Building B (now occupied by Goodyear Tire & Rubber), Ford Motor Co., Chrysler Corp., Rehabilitation Associates Inc., Dearborn Paper Products Co., American Legion Post #1 (now vacant), Auto Zone Inc., etc .
Rochester is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, with a population of over 122,000 as of the 2010 census. The capital and largest city of the region, it is also its most populous municipality. Rochester is twinned with Quito, Ecuador and Istanbul, Turkey. The first Europeans to visit what is now Rochester were French traders in 1601–02 when they explored the Upper Peninsula of Michigan Territory along the Huron River as part of their search for a route to India through Lake Superior. They named the area "Rochester" after their hometown in Normandy, France. The first permanent European settlement was made by fur trader John Jameson on July 24, 1786 when he and his party founded the town of Marquette on Iron Mountain nearpresent-day Rochester Hills. For years this outpost served as an important stop on John Jacob Astor's fur trade network from Superior south to Georgian Bay. In 1814, during the Mexican War of Independence, General José de Urrea besieged Marquette and forced Jameson to surrender; Urrea took over Jameson's holdings and renamed them Santa Fe de la Noche (later Santa Fe Springs). In 1825 localities within present-day Monroe County were organized into three townships: Hartford Township (northwest corner), Antrim Township (southeast corner), and Onondaga Township (southwest corner). On November 3, 1830 Antrim Township formed as a result of a land acquisition campaign led by Augustus Calkins following his victory at Battle Of Gratiot that ended Indian resistance against white settlers across central New York State; all but one township within present-day Monroe County had been acquired by then. That year also saw Guttenberg's arrival in southeastern Michigan having journeyed via Canada from New York City where he had been successful in organizing anti-slave uprisings among free blacks living on Long Island Sound before landing at Kingston on April 12th 1831; Guttenberg quickly set about building an abolitionist community around Gratiot Point located southeast of Rochester proper on what is now Mill Road/Three Mile Creek Road (). On January 1st 1850 all but two townships within present day Monroe County--Monroe Heights and Genesee--became part of newly created Oakland County when it was organized from portions of Ontario County including Buffalo Grove/East Falls Village/West Falls Village eastward along US Highway 22 between Elmira and Auburn Hills; Buffalo Grove would form part of Rochester while East Falls Village would be absorbed into nearby Lyonvillle Township later that year The reconstruction period following World War II was characterized by rapid growth in both population and businesses due largely toAINF stimulus programs which drew many workers northward seeking stability or opportunity amidst rapidly changing social mores post-war America During this time much high profile construction projects such as Interstate 495 were constructed including downtown landmarks like Red Wings Arena still standing today while other large infrastructure projects such as Washtenaw River Bridge opened just prior to University Park opening up adjacent thereto providing easy access for students commuting into downtown during peak hours
