Rochester is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Monroe County. The population was 81,098 as of 2014, making it the fourth-most populous city in Michigan behind Detroit, Lansing, and Flint. The area now known as Rochester was first inhabited by the Huron people before being annexed by the United States in 1795 as part of the Northwest Territory. Theodus Settlers arrived from Sweden in 1814 and founded a village onland at what is now downtown Rochester in 1825. Trade with neighboring Canada led to increased manufacturing here but also led to social unrest which culminated with the American Revolution when British soldiers burned down much of downtown Rochester on October 15th, 1775. The settlement prospered for a time due to its location near major trade routes but rapid growth caused problems such as overcrowding and lack of resources which eventually led to political instability and economic decline during the 1800s until very recent times whenowntown Rochester has become a vibrant business district with several high-end restaurants, clubs, retail stores and office buildings lining Elmwood Avenue northward from Main Street (the original commercial corridor). In 1840, John Smedley purchased land northwest of town that became what is now Midtown Rochester (later renamed Eastman Business Park). This expanded neighborhoods – Southside/Westside – into today’s east side between Elmwood Avenue and State Street while Northside/Northeast Side grew around University Ave., just south of Main Street where today’s City Hall building stands. During this time period new construction included First National Bank Building at 6th Ave., now home to Midtown Tavern; Masonic Temple at 10 Downing St.; Chenango House at 12 Wacker Dr.; First Presbyterian Church at 168 Nelva Ave.; Masonic Lodge No 1 on Waterfront Rd./ present day Houghton Mifflin Corporate campus; two hospitals: Erie General Hospital (now Erie County Medical Center) located on Genesee River west of town line upstream from Downtown; Huron Infirmary also located on Genesee River west of town line upstream from Downtown; Schoolcraft Asylum northeast corner Schoolcraft Rd./present day Stroudsburg Area Hospital & Health Services complex housing multiple sclerosis patients & other diseases In 1868 James Aiken moved his printing press 2 miles southeast along Main Street from his printing shop just north off Enterprise Road to become another significant player in early newspapers industry here followed by John Wanamaker who moved his presses downriver into what are now Grand Rapids & Holland Township etc.. Together these printers laid down some basic rules for how newspapers were printed including using smaller type size than ever before then continuing this practice until 1912 when larger typesetting machines came onto market courtesy of George Eastman who had bought Wanamaker’s presses back following Wanamaker’s bankruptcy . The skyline includes two large office buildings—One Financial Center (formerly Sears) and One Johnson Tower (formerly World Trade Center)—as well as many smaller ones along main arterial streets such as Monroe Avenue, Elmira Avenue, Troy Boulevard, and Clinton Avenue; thisskyline has changed very little since 1972 when Chrysler built their first plant there.
Rochester is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 24,486 at the 2010 census, making Rochester one of the most populous cities in Michigan. The first permanent settler in what is now Rochester was Nicholas de Lacrosse, who arrived with his family from Normandy on July 26, 1688. He named his new land "Rochester Township", after the City of Rochester, England. In 1827, John Dibble bought 2,500 acres (1 km²) in what is now downtown Rochester for $10 per acre ($2/km²). Dibble founded the Township Bank and Trust Company to provide banking services to settlers in what is now downtown Rochester. In 1828–29, he donated land to create University Park which became home to Central Michigan University and other educational institutions until it merged with Michigan State University in 1974. A fire destroyed much of downtown Rochester on November 12, 1886; however, due to donations by citizens including banker Edward Haggerty and contractor J. Prentice Hall (now Pearson Education), reconstruction began quickly and ended only a few weeks later when money ran out again. This fire also left many buildings unoccupied for months because of insurance claims that were still being processed as recently as 1889! On October 1st 1888 local residents gathered at City Hall Square for an event commemorating "the birthday of our town" - this was actually their celebration OF new construction beginning inside City Hall Building! In 1893–94 Henry Clay Frick built Frick's Steel Works on Main Street across from Central High School – today known as Frick's Factory Museum – which became one of the largest steel plants west of Chicago before it closed its doors in 2001 amid concerns about environmental damage done during production dating back to World War II! In 1903–04 Wm Fenton opened Fenwick & Wigham Jewelers on Main Street opposite Ford’s Theatre; this store is currently part of The mall at Oneonta Mall located just east off I-75 between exit 95A & exit 97A
