The name Rochester comes from Romulus and Remus, two brothers who were taken to Rome as hostages by Julius Caesar in 509 BC. The first settler in what would become Rochester was Nicholas Halleck, who arrived in 1786 with his family from New Hampshire. He set up a mill on the east side of town and started trading goods with local tribes such as the Hurons. In 1814, he sold his land near downtown to John Davenport for $2,000 cash and became one of the first investors in what would become known as the Davenport Land Company. This company developed a chain of mills that produced flour, cornmeal, cottonseed oil and other products until it went out of business in 1920. In 1824, Rochester became an organized township under control of majorities among its citizens supported by wealthy fur traders Daniel Cooley and Nathan Myrick Sr., who had settled thereabouts between 1813-1820 along with their families (the Myricks are also buried at First Congregational Church). Development continued apace through much of this period despite interruptions caused by war (1812-15), disease (1692-1795), floods (1825) and Native American raids (1827-29). By 1840, when James Kiser took office as Township Clerk – after serving for two terms as Mayor – Rochester boasted three churches, twenty four schools plus hundred residents; more than any other township in those early days! A fire destroyed most of downtown on November 5th 1845 while merchants were unloading cargo from ships at Custom House Square; only a few buildings survived including Kiser's former office building which now houses an advertising agency called Mercury Communications Inc.. Despite these setbacks steady growth occurred throughout much of the 19th century culminating with construction beginning on Main Street across from Trinity Episcopal Church on December 10th 1893 which completed just before World War I stopped all private enterprise in America; making possible widespread consumption within easy reach without sacrifice to quality or schedule
