Rochester is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the eastern border of the Lower Peninsula and on the Straits of Mackinac. The population was 61,744 at the 2010 census, making it one of the largest cities in Michigan and its second-largest city by population after Detroit. The first European settlers in what is now Rochester were French Huguenots who arrived in 1701 as part of a larger group known as La Flotte d'Orléans under Admiral Louis Joliet. They built a small settlement on an island in what is now downtown Rochester and called it Jarrydouille (from Jean de la Flotte). The first permanent settler was Pierre Orcutt, who arrived in 1764 and established himself atillusatively near present day Cathedral Square. Orcutt's heirs sold their holdings to General John Woolridge in 1814, who named it Rochester because he had heard about a rich copper mine near modern day Mount Pleasant. During America's Revolutionary War, General Anthony Wayne led his army through Rochester on their way to battle against British forces at Yorktowns Battlefields. In recognition of Wayne's service, local citizens erected an iron fence around town to commemorate his exploits two decades later. The old fortifications still stand today along with several contributing buildings from that time including Wayne's Headquarters building which still stands today and houses the University of Michigan Library inside. The city reached its peak during World War II when more than 120 factories were constructed within 1 mile (1 km) of downtown Rochester for war production such as aircraft manufacturing plants for Lockheed Martin Company, Bombardier Aviation Division plant (now Northrop Grumman), ITT Rayon plant (now United Technologies Corporation), Dodge Aircraft Engine Plant No 4 & 5 (now Maytag Co.), American Telephone & Telegraph Company’s Western Union Building (& later Bell Labs), State Street Lighting District Headquarters Building (& later City Hall)), Pioneer Memorial Park Cemetery (), Town Hall (), Masonic Temple (), Stroud Glass Works ($) In 1965-1966 construction began on Waterfront Stadium which would become one of America's most popular sports venues ever hosting both NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey Championships games between Miami University and Notre Dame Fighting Irish as well as Flint Hills Bowl game between Oklahoma Sooners and Iowa Hawkeyes In 1978 River Rouge Raceway opened up just north off I-696/I-75 exit #2 providing racing fans access to oval track that could seat over 100k spectators per race
