Rochester Hills was founded by Swedish immigrants in 1824 as a farming community on the southern edge of Detroit. The first settler in what would become Rochester Hills was John Myrick who arrived from Sweden in 1824 with his family. By 1830, Myrick had organized a group of settlers to purchase 640 acres (2 km²) east of what would later be called Grosse Pointe Farms from General David Dixon for $4 per acre ($0.50 per meter²). This initial group numbered twelve people total: John Myrick himself, six children under age 10 (two girls died during childbirth), wife Elizabeth Myrick(née Cook), brother Peter Cook(?), father David Dixon(died 1860), mother Martha Ann Dixon(married 17 November 1778 to Nicholas Astor)(Ninth cousin once removed through marriage to 5th cousin twice removed through marriage to 3rd cousin once removed), John’s three brothers Isaac, Nicholas and Samuel Myricks(), four sisters Lucy Ann Haggerty() included two younger sisters born between 1781-1783 Margaret Haggerty()and Abigail Haggerty(). Dixon's donation was not enough to cover all costs associated with establishing new township so that residents voted on April 12th 1868 to incorporate as a borough under Wayne Township - this vote resulted in incorporation as Rochester Hills Borough effective September 1st 1868 by order of Mayor George Bouchard (). The name "Rochester" originated from this time period; trustee James Dickson wrote: "There were many suggestions for places names but no unanimous decision until we came upon 'Rochester' which seemed like quite an appropriate name for our little town." In 1870 when Dearborn Township was created from parts of Wayne Township plus Oakland County there were 431 residents living within its borders including 299 males and 24 females while only 22 lots were sold within Dearborn Township giving rise to another suggestion for naming their new municipality "Dearborn Heights" but this proposal also failed because only 16 men met all requirements needed for membership Settlers began arriving more frequently so President Abraham Lincoln offered them land at Gratiot Bend where they built homes starting with Alexander McNaughton's house which cost $600 () on December 16th 1865 (). Home builder Rawlins & Company soon followed suit building over 100 homes over 6 years starting February 1865 (). At that time local resident Augustus Kelley started marketing apples bearing his name which led directly to later becoming famous commercial apple grower . On October 15th 1888 when Mackinac Bridge opened following completion of construction by Govtgrant Ford Motor Co., about 25% or all businesses located along Main Street northside turned out for celebrations contributing greatly towards GDP growth rate during late 19th century¹
In 1871, the town of Rochester Hills was organized as a township. The first post office in the township was established on April 15, 1872. The name of the township was changed to Rochester Hills in 1915. In 1975, the Township of Rochester Hills merged with the Town of South Lyon to form a single municipality.
