The town site on the east side of Rochester River was purchased by John Sutherlands in 1825 from the Huron tribe for $1,000. Sutherlands named his new village after Lord Byron, who had been killed two years earlier near this area while raiding with General Anthony Wayne's army. In 1830, Mr. Green bought out Mr. Sutherlands' interest and renamed it Rochester Hills after himself and his wife Harriet Bache (later Mrs. Washburn). In 1835, Mr. Green subdivided his land into lots and sold them to others for $50 each. By 1840, there were over 100 residents living in Rochester Hills In 1846-47 when DetroitChapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings were going on – many citizens fled to escape creditors – 19% of all immigrants living in America arrived via steamboats arriving at Buffalo Bayou (now called Genesee River) from Canada that year: men mainly but also women and children; more than 1 million people came during that time period alone across all ports of entry In 1865-66 when then newly formed Michigan State University moved from Ann Arbor to East Lansing its first building was located on Wilson Avenue between Third Street and Fourth Street which later became known as Campus Drive; also that year a schoolhouse burned down which led to construction of what would become SOAS’s School Building No 4 on Ziegler Road between Old Main Street and University Boulevard which opened in 1966 During World War II almost 7500 soldiers died or were injured fighting here either in action or following their return home

Rochester Hills is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the largest city in the Washtenaw County area. The population was 17,813 at the 2010 census, up from 15,541 at the 2000 census. It is now part of Detroit metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Rochester Hills was James Wickersham, who arrived on July 24, 1814 with his family from Norwich, England. He founded a log cabin at what is now corners of Main Street and Jewell Avenue. One year later, he and his wife Judith bought 640 acres (246 ha) of land grant from Nicholas Presson for $4 per acre ($1 per sq ft). They named their new home "Rochester" after the town in England where they had been living before coming to America. In 1828, John Mound opened a general store at corner of Main and Jewell Avenues which became one of the longest-standing businesses in Rochester Hills until it closed its doors in 1991. In 1830s there were two small sawmills operating on opposite side of North Branch River near present day School Rd./Mound Rd., about 2 miles northeast of downtown Rochester Hills.. According to 1880 US Census records: "Rochester" had a population of 105; "Washtenaw Township", with a population of 374; "Harrison Township", with a population of 511; and "Soquel Township", with a population of 191... thus making it one or two hundred years older than any other community within today's boundaries."
