Rochester Hills is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 17,844 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in the Detroit metropolitan area and one of the most populous cities in Michigan. It is home to Wayne State University, one of the largest universities in Michigan and one of its two campuses within the Greater Detroit region; as well as several other large companies, including Ross open space and Little America malls. Rochester Hills is also angateway to I-696, which connects Downtown Detroit with Ann Arbor and Auburn Hills. Rochester Hills has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years. The first European settler in what would become Rochester was Jacob Wilcox who established a trading post on present-day West Side Road in 1796. Wilcox named his outpost "Fenway" after Bostonian patriots John Fenway and his son Samuel Fenway Sr., both merchants and political leaders who had played significant roles in organizing American independence from Great Britain (the original Fenway House still stands today). In 1812, William Snyder founded Snyder's Mills with land east of present day State Road 7 near what is now Southfield Township; this became known as Snyder's Corner because it served as an early commercial center for agriculture around that location. By 1814, when surveyors laid out township boundaries for Lansing County, Snyder's Corner lay within Onondaga County boundaries but was included within Lansing Township until 1840 when it reverted back to Onondaga County jurisdiction due to boundary changes following Indian Removal (the removal of most Native Americans from their ancestral lands north of Lake Huron)). In 1836, James Hutton opened a brewery called Hutton & Son on Main Street which became world-renowned for its beers during the 19th century era (Hutton & Sons Brewery still operates today). In 1840, local resident Ignatius Donnelly organized a group that purchased 6 square miles (15 km²) south of downtownDetroit along present day Gratiot Avenue for $3 million dollars ($ as of 2019)[1] This area would become what is now Midtown Detroit along Grand River Avenue where Donnelly founded Donley Land Company which developed much of what are now Midtown neighborhoods including One Campus Martini Drive/Mall Place/Southside Center between Woodward Avenue and East Elm Street - one block east of Park Row – anchor shopping areas along Woodward Ave corridor with restaurants businesses surrounded by high density housing developments such as 1stdome Casino Pistons Stadium Authority plaza located just across Gratiot from riverfront park

Rochester Hills is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn (DWR) metropolitan area and one of its five cities. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Rochester Hills were French traders and missionaries who arrived in 1795. They named their new town after Mount Royal, Canada's highest mountain then located east of Montreal on the border between Canada and New England. In 1802, an act was passed by Congress which designated a portion of Wayne County as "Rochester Township". The township was ceded to Michigan by President James Kippling on November 10, 1807 following his victory in a gubernatorial election that year. In 1836, John Haines founded the first post office in this area with mail service from Grand Rapids to Lansing via Dearborn Heights. On October 25, 1854, when Lansing became the capital of Michigan under acts approved by Governor Cassius Mott, Rochester Hills had a population of 1,200 residents petitioning for incorporation into Lansing as part of that city's growth due to burgeoning trade with other states within what was then called "the Great Lakes Region". The petition was granted on December 15th and incorporated as Rochelle Township on January 5th following an act authored by Representative Isaac Nourse Sr.. On March 13th 1865 – just shy of 100 years after its incorporation – Rochelle Township amalgamated with neighboring East Bloomfield Township to form present-day Rochester Hills through an act approved by Governor John Engler on April 11th 1865; this event also marked DWR's entrance into full membership within Metro Detroit Area waterscapes Suburban Waterfront District #3 effective September 1st 1965). Throughout much of its history as a small town platted around two churches - First Congregational United Methodist Church (now Our Lady Of The Angels Catholic Church) on North Meridian Street and Stonington Presbyterian Church (now Christ Episcopal Cathedral), both built around 1840 - Rochelle struggled against waves OF annexation BY other municipalities throughout Wayne County until finally achieving municipal status within DWR territorially upon becoming one entity under Regent William Cowles' guidance during 1967 merger proceedings culminating withDetroit Mayor Coleman Young proclaiming February 27th 1969 "the date Whitaker v City School Board ruled unconstitutional" heralding increasing community activism over years culminating ultimately in establishment ceremonies held November 14TH 2001 at former parish church facility spanning 2 acres adjacent thereto newly renovated & redeveloped beyond all expectations comprising some $250K/year economic impact ever since resulting unique designation From thenceforth known simply as "The City" or simply "Rochelle." :There are several theories about why Rochelle became so active politically over time: One theory suggests that because it had been annexed many times before by other municipalities it began feeling like an underdog; another theory suggests that because it lacked any formal sewer systems or water services those communities began sending their citizensosuke initiative petitions directly to DWR asking for help; still another theory points out that because there wasn't really anything else done about annexations being allowed without proper notification either from DWR or from individual townsfolk themselves most people assumed things would eventually stay put given how little action had actually been taken thus far... Anyway back to my original point... It seems like we have been very proactive politically here ever since we got our own municipality!
