Rochester Hills is a city in the southwestern corner of Michigan, United States. The population was 13,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. Rochester Hills is located about east of Lansing and west of Detroit. The first settlers to what is now Rochester Hills were farmers who arrived in 1814 from Canada. Clarence Darrow, who later became an American lawyer and judge, was born here in 1847. In 1868, John Fenton built the first permanent house in present-day Rochester Hills. Four years later he opened a mill on what is now North Main Street where he manufactured flour and other goods for local residents and sold them through his store. By 1880, Fenton had developed a large agricultural empire that included 3 mills, 20 farms, over 100 slaves and more than 1 million bushels of crops grown annually on his many properties. The city's current form as it exists today began to take shape during this time with incorporation as an unincorporated township on February 15, 1892 by Mayor James Hickey along with six others who had united to create the municipality under Michigan law then known as An Act To Promote Justice et Cetera (the "City Charter" still extant). During World War I (1918-1921), Rochester Hills played host to military installations including Camp Carson which operated from 1919 until its closure in 1922; Camp Sherman which operated from 1922 until its closure in 1923; Fort Snelling which operated from 1924 until its closure in 1925; White Sands Training Center which operated from 1926 until its closing in 1930; Big One Ammunition Plant which operated from 1931 until its closing in 1933; and Indian Springs Armory Site No 2 which served as a training ground for Ulysses S Grant’s army during World War II (1941-1945). This period also saw construction of Our Lady Of The Angels Catholic Church – one of only two churches ever built outside of Chicago – followed by growth within the limits of town while efforts were made to bring water power into service for village use by creating the first municipal park west of Detroit in 1948 when City Council members decided that such a project would be promoted by their organization rather than through private enterprise or philanthropy alone - finally achieving completion ten years later after much hard work by citizens including Mr Deputy Mayor Wayne McCullough! By 1893, the city of Detroit had become so large that Rochester Hills decided to annex into it. In 1932, when Michigan became an American state, Rochester Hills became part of Washtenaw County. It lost much of its business base due to shrinking industry but kept its name and continue growing as a bedroom community for Detroit residents.
