However,riverview revived somewhat following World War II with new businesses popping up such as an engineering firm and a television broadcaster (WXYZ-TV). Today Riverview retains some key aspects of its past which make it an interesting place to visit – such as its historical buildings and neighborhoods – but is also home to many modern day amenities such as shopping malls and professional sports teams.
In 1821, the first post office in Riverview was established. The town was founded by George Armstrong Custer and his brother-in-law, Jacob Riis. In 1829, the village of Riverview was organized and named for the river that runs through it. On July 4, 1830, a fire destroyed most of the town and killed over 80 people. The community rebuilt and continued to grow until it merged with other towns in 1868.
