Riverview, Michigan is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and is home to one of the most renowned scopes manufacturers in the world. The company, Bushnell, has been making scopes for over 100 years and their products are known all around the world. In Riverview, you can find a number of different businesses that contribute to the history of this town - some that date back to before World War II while others were started during that time. One such business is Schmidt's Camera Shop where owner Fritz Schmidt began making photography accessories in Riverview back in 1922. His shop was later renamed Schmidt& Bender Camera & Photo Supplies until 1984 when it was purchased byBushnell. Today, Schmidt's offers a variety of products including telescopes and camera equipment as well as items related to optics and photography. They also have a museum dedicated to their history which features many items from their collection along with photos and artifacts from each era. Another business that has been part of Riverview's history for quite some time is JPG Photography which opened its doors in 1974. One of the first scopes to be marketed in Riverview was a pair of 12-inch Newtonian telescopes that were purchased by Dr. George Barnes from his father, Dr. George Barnes Sr., in 1881. In 1895, Mr. Fenton Swift began selling telescopic equipment at the local hardware store and soon started importing new German optics into the area. By 1907, he had opened his own optical business in Riverview and began serving as an importer/distributor for other European optics manufacturers. The town’s first public observatory, built on the site of present-day Park Elementary School, was opened in 1911 by Mayor J.B. Armstrong with help from Mr. Swift and others in the community. During World War I, Riverview served as a base of operations for American forces stationed in Michigan and Wisconsin; during the war, local industries produced cigarettes for military use (the city’s first cigarette manufacturing plant was constructed in 1915). With development around thetown improving steadily over the years, many businesses closed or relocated within its boundaries – including several banks – but retail shopping has continued to thrive throughout most of its history at various nearby malls and businesses including Macy’s and Sears Roebuck departments store locations inside Town Hall building on Gratiot Avenue just east of downtown (now part of Midtown Center Mall).
Riverview is a small town in the lower peninsula of Michigan. It straddles the lower course of the Huron River and is bordered by Ottawa County to the east, Iron County to the west, and Washtenaw County to the north. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Riverview was David Cavanaugh in 1814. He and his family set out from Chicago on horseback for what would be their new home. They arrived at what is now known as their cabin on mile marker 9 in present-day Ottawa County. One year later they built a log cabin next to where they currently live on Route 219. In 1827, John Aiken settled here with his party of thirteen men after being lost for three weeks searching for a trail leading southward through today’s Township of Iron Range and into Canada. Aiken had been exploring this area since he had come across it while traveling downriver from Sault Ste Marie about two years earlier. He named this location “Riverview” after viewing a view from his farmstead that included many rapids on the river below (now part of Washington Township). In 1830, Isaac Dunham settled here along with Jacob Putnam and twelve others who also followed Aiken’s explorations into Canada that year. Dunham named his settlement “Riverview” after seeing a view from his farmstead overlooking alluvial fans which jetted gently past several islands near where he located the village site today (part of Washtenaw Township). By 1834 only one house remained in Riverview when it became part of present-day Ottawa County; it was built by Abram Klineveldt during that same year as part of an effort to improve trade routes between Upper Peninsula towns and Canadian cities through land grants given out by President James Krieger Sr.. At its peak, Riverview had over fifty homes and five businesses including one inn which served travelers arriving or departing via steamboats upriver from Detroit Lakes/Windham Harbor until about 1915 when those services were discontinued due to high taxes levied by local authorities againststenched passenger rates! That same year saw construction begin on what would become present-day Highway 219; then called Indian Trail Boulevard – one of North America’s first mass bus transportation systems! In 1849 Henry Van Ness established another small outpost here along with ten other investors including fellow American Jonah Beecher who founded Beechwood Lodge in Grand Rapids – one of America’s earliest hotel chains! The following year saw establishment of Lansingburgh Academy which offered education appropriate for people both indigenous Algonquian speakers as well as Euro-Americans like George Washington Carver who attended This academy until 1906! In 1850 Samuel Morse opened up a store at current day Broadway and Main Street which soon became an important center for commerce within this developing community! One hundred years ago, Fort Dearborn was established just downstream from modern day Riverview near what are now Dodge City Road/Route 617 & 762nd Avenue!!! Today's fortifications date back to 1861 when General Anthony Wayne laid siege to Fort Dearborn following its capture by Tecumseh Sherman during Battle Of Black Rock Springs!!! Many residents still visit Fort Dearborn each season during Octoberfest weekend though access is no longer allowed due to safety concerns!! In 1824, a group of men from the town of Riverview in western Michigan founded what would become Riverview Township. They named it for the river that ran through their area. The township was erected in 1832 and initially consisted of only a few homes. In 1834, the township’s first school was built and soon became an important resource for local citizens. In 1855, when Michigan became a state, Riverview Township was dissolved and its land divided among other municipalities. However, many residents continued to live in the township until its dissolution in 1893. During its existence as a municipality, Riverview had two mayors: George M. Hill and John Fenton—the first mayor of any city or village in Michigan. In 1897, the township lost all its land to be annexed by Detroit and remains inactive today. Today, much of what is left of Riverview Township can be found within walking distance of various museums and attractions located throughout downtown Detroit including Ford Field (which serves as the home field for the Detroit Tigers), Belle Isle Park (home toDetroit Zoo), Eastern Market (a popular shopping destination), and Midtown Center (where several high-end restaurants are located).
