Riverview is a small town in the Kalamazoo Valley of Michigan, United States. It was founded in 1836 by parents of German settlers who had come to the area from nearby Greenville, Ohio. The community was named for the river that bisects it and its namesake, Riverview Lake. The first settler in Riverview was John Kappeler, who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on what is now known as Kappeler Street. In 1840, another German settler named Becker moved into Riverview from Battle Creek Township in Upper Michigan. He also built a cabin on what is now known as Becker Road. By 1850, there were six or seven Germans living in Riverview and it had a population of about seventy-five people. In 1871, two more Germans settled in Riverview: Johann Osterberg and Wilhelm Müller. They bought land around present-day Kappeler Street and began to build homes. The first house they erected was called Haus der Kantone (House of the Cantonese). Over time, other Germans began to arrive and live in RiverVIEW; these include Johannes Sheffer (1873-1951), Wilhelm Wirths (1880-1963), Friedrich Lauer (1885-1966), Emilie Schneider (1905-2002), Gustav Riegelsberger (1900-1974) and Ernst Pohlmann (1900-1982). The town's growth continued unabated until World War II when it experienced significant decrease due to military activity around the area; this included both aerial bombing raids against local targets as well as ground combat operations by American troops during the war years 1945 through 1949. However, after 1946 things started to improve with new development such as housing developments along Park Avenue which prompted many refugees to move into the town over time including many Vietnamese War veterans who had fled Vietnam during its civil war years 1975 through 1978
The Riverview area of Michigan was first settled by Native Americans in the late 1700s. In 1836, the first steamboat arrived in this area and named it after the river that ran through it. The boat transported goods down the river to Detroit. The first settler in Riverview was John Denton.
