Riverview is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,819 at the 2010 census, down from 3,059 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights–Warren County School District. The community was founded in 1871 by white farmers and their black slaves as a land grant to Colonel John Fenton. The name comes from the river that flows through it: "Riverside" refers to its location on the east side of Muskegon Heights between Saginaw and Orion lakes; "View" means seeing (or being able to see). In 1892, Riverview was incorporated as a village. In 1907, Riverview became a city when it annexed portions of Saginaw Township and Monterey Township. It lost these annexations in 1954 but regained them in 1957 when it merged with Warren County's other two cities, Cheboygan and Traverse City. In 1971, it merged with nearby Onaway again becoming one city with three wards - all located within Onaway's limits - though residents continue to identify themselves as belonging to Riverview proper. Today, Riverview is home to many businesses which are integral to its economic vitality: retail stores such as General Motors (GM), Nike,[1] Sears,[2] JCPenney,[3][4] Old Navy,[5][6][7][8] and Macy’s[9], light industrial companies including Ford-Lincoln[10], Waffle House[11],[12], KFC[13],[14], Burger King[15], Jack In The Box[16]. As well as several schools: four public high schools (Muskegon Heights-Warren County High School District; Oakland Park Charter High School; Southfield Area Vocational-Technical Schools) and one private school serving students K-12th grade only - John Fenton Elementary School.[17],[18]. Additionally, there are several parks/open space areas within easy reach of Riverview residents including Olentangy Lakefront Park which includes an picnic area complete with grills for weekend BBQs and picnicking capabilities; parkland also contains several walking trails system making it an excellent place for bird watching or running errands outside of school hours – perfect conditions for spending lunchtime or after school! The first white settlers in Riverview were Hugh and Judith McNaught, who arrived in 1807. The McNaught family was the first to homestead in what is now Riverview Township. In 1814, John Boudreau settled on land east of the river. By 1847, all of present-day Riverview had been developed. In 1861, Alexander McDougall and his brother James founded the town of Dearborn on the west bank of the river. It was here that McDougall erected a sawmill and store. Dearborn became an important commercial center after it became part of Michigan Territory in 1863. The town prospered until1877 when a severe drought caused much crop failure and economic decline. In 1895, a new bridge across the river was built to improve transportation between Dearborn and Riverview Township. Riverview experienced another period of prosperity during World War II when many businesses closed due to hard times but recovered by 1944. During this time period, many homes were built in what is now Riverview Township including those owned by Pritzker Pavilion founder Harry Matson Jr., UAW President Leo Wiesenthal, Apple Inc.'s CEO Steve Jobs and Ford's Chairman Henry Ford II. After World War II ended, business began to decline again as Detroit advanced into post-war prosperity; however, Riverview continued to prosper with some small businesses still keeping pace with global trends until the early 2000s when the township lost its vitality due primarily to declines in population growth rates throughout Wayne County overall combined as well as within its own municipality which has seen significant redevelopment over that time frame making it less reliant uponriveriewhethersoever located; though there are pockets remaining where people continue to live close to work or school while their properties remain active units used for residential purposes only
