In 1865, when State Highway 10 was created following Lincoln Highway west from Detroit across upper Michigan, Riverview became one of its original two incorporated towns within that highway's jurisdiction - paralleling it northerly until it passed under Grand Rapids Avenue east in 1980. At this point it reverted back partially into rural Wayne County until it joined Metro Detroit again when Mio became an independent city in 2006.

By 1825, life in Riverview had exploded with waves of settlers moving into this undeveloped area from surrounding counties. Most importantly, these early settlers brought their skills and technologies with them when they moved into this new region. Some key pioneers who took part in this early growth include John Stephenson (1781-1855), who operated a mill on Ottawa Street; David Dunlap (1806-77), who built a sawmill at present day Battlefield Park; Isaac Ritchie (1814-93), who founded one ofthe first banks in what is nowRiverview; and Thaddeus Stevens (1819-95), who cofounded Oneida Savings Bank nearpresent day Clinton Avenue. The townsite name “Riverview” was chosen by members of the village board in 1907 because it sounded like a stream flowing through the town site – an idea that originated with Supervisor George Wickersham Jr.. The stream that flows through RiverVIEW today actually originates from several miles away at Battle Creek Dam which forms part of Mifflin Lake State Park
On the east bank of the Riverview, Michigan river is located a community of about 9,500 people that was founded in 1851 by Reverend John F. Macdonald. The original settlers were Presbyterian missionaries who came to help build up the area around what is now Riverview. The community grew rapidly due to its location on a major waterway and its close proximity to other settlements in central Michigan. By 1865, there were over 20 families living in Riverview. By 1870, the population had grown to over 100 and by 1881 it had reached 300. In 1892, the town was renamed after General Anthony Wayne which helped add some toughness and strength to its name. In recent years, Riverview has seen a few struggles with economic recession and crime rates which have caused some residents to move away for fear of being affected adversely.
