Riverview is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,691 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Washtenaw County after Ann Arbor. The name "Riverview" originated from the Flint River which flows through the town. The first settler in what is now Riverview was James Henson on July 1, 1824. Henson donated of land to establish the city and named it for his river view property that he had purchased a few miles away from where he lived originally. In 1865, another settler named John Daugherty moved into what is now Riverview and founded a store and post office there. Daugherty's store became one of the first businesses in Riverview when it opened on December 12, 1865. He also built a cotton gin and provided lumber for local construction projects. In 1902, another settler named Arthur Cramer bought some land east of present day River View and established farmland there which became known as Cramer Park today. Riverview is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the east bank of the Kalamazoo River. The population was 1,970 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1831 by farmers who had relocated from Ottawa County, Illinois. The name is derived from a word meaning "river running through." The first permanent settler in Riverview was Captain John Fenton, who arrived in 1837 and built a cabin on the site that still stands today. In 1840, Daniel Slone moved to Riverview from Battle Creek and began growing corn and wheat on his farmstead. In 1847, Captain George Cook came to Riverview with his family and started an industry that would become one of its mainstay: manufacturing bricks for churches and other buildings in Kalamazoo. In 1850, John Prentice erected a log cabin near present-day Grand Rapids as his home until he sold it to Amos Hocker in 1857. Hocker became an early backer of education within RiverView village; he donated land for the first school house in 1861 and helped build two more schools between 1865 and 1870. He also funded construction of a water tower (1871) and an early dam which served as both storage capacity for Village settlers' crops and power source for local mills during times of drought. One such mill later became part of Ironton Manufacturing Company after being acquired by Kodak Corporation in 1952. During World War II, many locals participated with the United States military by serving as carpentry specialists or working at shipyards across central Michigan producing munitions needed for war effortagenomics investigations begun before Pearl Harbor brought America into World War II In 1948 community members voted to change their name to River View following approval from then-Mayor Alvin Karpyshyn .
