It was founded in 1848 by farmers and their families who moved from the east side of the Lower Peninsula to the current site of Riverview because of bad water quality and pressure from industry. The name comes from a tributary of the Washtenaw River, which flows through the town. The town has a population of about 1,500 people as of 2010. It is located on the south side of Marquette County between Saginaw and Ingham counties. The river forms its border with Ingham County to the north, while Saginaw County borders Marquette County to the west and south. The town was named for General James Wilkinson (1786-1863), an American general during World War I who served in India and Burma as commanding officer for Indian forces under British command before coming to America to serve in the War Department in 1825. Wilkinson had been born at what is now Riverview Township on November 16, 1786, son of Sir George Wilkinson, 2nd Baronet (1753-1824), one of England's leading landowners at that time and owner or manager of more than 600 miles (1,200 km)2 (about one-seventh all United States land). In 1848, when Michigan became a territory within United States control following Mexican independence, Wilkinson donated land along both banks of Big Creek on which Riverviewtown was founded—later known as "Wilkinson Heights". In 1857, when Lansing became city limits within US territory following Michigan's admission into Confederation as a state in 1849,[1] part of Lansing's eastern boundary lay just east of present-day Riverview;[2] so Lansing levied an assessment on properties near what is now Riverside Drive – making it difficult for early settlers to purchase land without paying taxes. However, this did not stop many farmers from moving into what is now Riverview due to its excellent water resources;[3] indeed, it would be until after World War II thatriverfront development would become common across much larger parts Of Michigan due largely to new transportation methods such as canals built by Flint Manufacturing Company founder George Flint Jr., also founder/manager/director/owner/operator(s)of several electric power plants included world-renowned Flint Lumber & Coal Co.; other sizable businesses developed along Canalside Drive including Wm Henson grocery store*, J P Fitzgerald Tire* [*All three were closed by 2006], Ford dealership*, Payless Shoes store*, Old Holland Furniture store*.

This post served as a center for trade along the Detroit-Windsor Canal. In 1840, Isaac Brock established a ranch adjacent to today's village of Riverview. Brock sold his land to settlers in 1849. The first store in Riverview opened its doors in 1850. Riverview became an incorporated village on December 3, 1861. The original town plat included land for a library, cemetery and schoolhouse. On March 15, 1865, voters approved creating an ambulance service and electing its first mayor, Wm Cramer (1841-1915). The early days of Riverview were difficult due to competition from other settlements in the area - especially Saginaw - which had been formed by pioneer farmers following surveys undertaken by Michiganders Impressed with what they saw as potential commercial opportunities within their new territory., many pioneers decided to settle near or inside of Detroit rather than risk moving westward into open prairies populated by Native Americans.- …the railroad arrived just as these earliest residents were beginning their challenges establishing themselves and developing their businesses…. Soon after coming onlineriver view became one of several vibrant communities nestled between two major cities.– ....railroad passengers would often stop at small cemeteries dotting both sides of I-75 just south of downtown before continuing north towards Cadillac….. By 1870averaging $3 per day revenue generated from goods shipped downriver made river view one Of The Most Vibrant Communities In Metro Detroit….All this activity helped make “Riverside” one Of The Most Prosperous Towns In Michigan
The Riverview area served as a commercial and social center for the community of Riverview from its earliest days. The first mention of the community is in 1827, when Surveyor General John S. Wood published an article entitled "A view of the village of Riverview" in the Michigan Gazette. At that time, river transportation was not common and access to the waterway was limited. However, by 1830,river transportation had become more prevalent and traders established businesses on both sides of the river. By 1835, there were six businesses operating in what is now known as Riverview Township. One business owner at that time wrote: "The distance between our house and store on the west bank (of the river) was about three rods; but we walked over to it every day from work." One early resident of Riverview said: "We started out from here about four or five miles back to get wheat for our house; but we never went any further than this point because there was no other way."
