Riverview is located on the north side of the Saginaw River in rural Township 5 south of Grand Rapids. The community began as an agricultural settlement in 1874, when immigrants from Hungary settled near what is now known as North Avenue and east of present day White Street. A post office was established at Riverview in 1875, and mail was transported by wagon train to nearby Hudsonville for delivery. In 1892, a store and hotel were built on present day White Street; however, these businesses failed within a few years. The first school was opened in 1893 by Mrs. Maria McClusky; it operated for two years before being closed due to lack of students. In 1896, ANTrim School District #2 merged with other districts to form district #1; however, school operations were not transferred until 1907 when district #1 split into two again: one serving South Haven Township (southwest corner of township), while the other serving Antrim Township (northwest corner). In 1899, homesteaders bought land adjoining modern day White Street from John Fenton for $575; this became known as "The Fenton Ranch". A post office called "Fenton" remained open until 1903 when it was renamed "Riverview". By 1902 there were only five residents living at Riverview; however, by 1915 there had grown to sixty-nine residents who seasonal worked on farms or raised livestock near their homes. The railroad arrived in Antrim during World War I and soon brought new jobs opportunities to the area; as a result many people decided to move from their original homeland into what would become Riverview. During World War II many citizens chose not to leave their homes because they knew that war would bring vast amounts of new wealth and opportunity creation for them. On the Riverview, Michigan side of the river, there are many contributing factors to the town's history. These include: TheTown of Riverview was founded in 1836 by fur traders and their families who arrived on the Upper Peninsula from what is now Canada. The first settler was George Shearer. By 1840, most of present-day Riverview had been developed and by 1851, it had a population of about 150 people. In 1861, the US government organized a district in Michiganders known as "the Western District". This area comprised all of Lower Michigan except for incorporated towns like Detroit and Grand Rapids. The Western District wanted its own sheriff, jailer, and other municipal services not presently provided by either Detroit or Grand Rapids. To get these services,Riverview petitioned the state legislature for authority to form its own town hall and build a courthouse within its boundaries. The legislature granted this request in 1862 but only allowed Riverview to create two streets within its limits- one leading east to west and another leading north to south. In 1867 they also grantedriverVIEW privilege (similar to cityhood) which gave it voting representation in state legislatures as well as passing laws that were passed without incident until 1889 when a local referendum voted against cityhood because it felt that it would decrease property values within Riverview's borders. Despite this vote,the townspeople persevered and established themselves as an independent community with their own mayor, school board, fire department etcetera In 1888 township trustees approved City Charter ordinances which created various new powers including taxing abilities (city charter permitted mills & businesses with $1 million or more in sales revenue to be taxed at 25% rate while single family homes & condos with over $100K didn't have any taxation). With this power came increased taxes paid by residents while still providing some autonomy for each individual township trustee In 1915 Township trustees passed an ordinance establishing Forest Park (now part of Hollandale) as a separate municipality outside of Riverview proper In 1924 Village trustees passed an ordinance setting up shoplifting Prevention Curfew hours from 7pm-11pm during weekdays/8am-12am on weekends; all liquor stores were required open 6 pm nightly from Monday through Saturday nights; personal property could not be stored overnight without written consent from store owner; maximum length storage time was 2 days per item
