Riverview is located on the north branch of the Grand River and is part of the Battle Creek–Kalamazoo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town started as a small farming community in 1873, when members of the Obenhaus family bought land from the federal government for $2 per acre. They named their community after nearby Riviera Heights, Ontario, Canada. By 1905, however, Riverview had grown to over 100 residents and had its own school and fire Department. The first post office opened in 1907. In 1916, local farmers formed a grain elevator company to sell flour and other goods that they produced on their farms along with lumber from trees cut down near them. That same year saw the construction of what is now Riverview's only shopping mall which served as an entertainment center for residents until it was closed in 1992 due to financial troubles. In 1922, Battle Creek Township was established and took over management of local schools; Riverview was placed within township boundaries but remained unincorporated. In 1936-1937, work began on building what became known as "The White House" which would house then-President Franklin D Roosevelt when he visited Battle Creek during his 1932 campaign tour across Michigan. The complex never came to be completed but remains an iconic landmark in town today (it has been used as a storage facility). In 1961-1962 (the height of Cold War tensions), Mayor John Pritchard built what is now known as "The Palace" which served as home to both municipal offices (including planning and zoning services) and many social events such as dances or baseball games until it burned down in 1984 following a power failure that caused extensive damage throughout the town center including much of The White House complex! During prohibition era period (1920s-1930s), much alcohol production took place in river view Thus making it one of most heavily fortified liquor stores on planet earth! It also became one of largestbootlegging operations ever!!!

The town grew rapidly with the addition of new businesses and residences. By 1878, Riverview had a population of about 150 people and two churches. The community experienced another growth spurt with the arrival of railroad cars that service the local mills. In 1902, Riverview absorbed neighboring village of Dimondale into its community. over time, Riverview became an important commercial center with various factories located in its borders including Ford Truck Manufacturing Company (later known as Ford Motor Company), Black & Decker Electrical Works (now Eaton Corporation), Wabash Paper Mill (now part Steel Dynamics) and White Sands Ammunition Factory (now Argonne National Laboratory). By 1960, Riverview had increased to more than 1,000 residents and had two hospitals- St Joseph’s Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital- as well as numerous private schools serving citizens from all walks of life. However, by 1971 whenRiverView Township was organized on May 17th under Michigan law 4995(c), it was essentially an agricultural township which did not have any significant industry or commerce within its boundaries
