Portage is a village in the town of Portage Heights, Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 599 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by Nicholas Larkin and his family as a trading post on the lower Missaukee River. The post office was established in 1838 and named for John C. Portage, an early settler. The Larkins were among the first Europeans to arrive in what is now Muskegon County; they arrived from Ireland on July 14, 1835, during the 40-day St. Lawrence Expedition under General David Hunter. A year later they erected a log cabin on the site of their present home, which served as their Trading Post until 1840 when they built a new cabin opposite where their current residence stands. In 1851 Nicholas Larkin purchased land east of present day Portage Heights from John Jenssen and began to build what would become his largest private home still standing today: Grosse Pointe Manor. The cornerstone for Grosse Pointe Manor was laid on November 17th, 1851 by Mr. & Mrs. Augustus Bemis (Mr.) In 1903 Driggs Wagon Works opened at what is now known as Main Street and North Avenue in downtown Portage Heights and quickly became one of America's leading manufacturer of wagons and coachwork items such as butler stools and bedroom suites etc.. In 1958 Driggs Wagon Works moved its operations to Saginaw after years of success there manufacturing parts for General Motors automobiles Trucksand buses etc... By 1984 all production had stopped but many portions of building remain active used mostly for storage/repair purposes currently housing several local businesses including Dentsply International (formerly part of Sharp Corporation) Today much about early history remains unchanged with few changes since then however some key aspects include: -The industry that produced primary goods like wagon parts helped shape not only American society but also how we view cars today -Driggs Wagon Works played an important role in driving down prices for goods while creating jobs across multiple industries thereby helping contribute to overall growth throughout American History
The first Europeans to visit the area that is now Portage, Michigan were traders and missionaries. Indian traders had been in the area for many years before white settlers arrived. The first European to settle in the area was John Law, who founded the town of Lawton in 1803. In 1814, he married Susannah Bequest, who was from a family of Indians who had lived near the mouth of the Kalamazoo River. The Bequest family helped develop what is now Portage Township. In 1830, a group of men led by Levi Coffin discovered gold on the Kawkawa Peninsula. This discovery led to an influx of people and businesses into the township. By 1835, there were over 100 people living in Portage Township. It was during this time that development began on what is now downtown Portage. In 1837, Alexander Mackenzie explored and surveyed what is now Michigan's Lower Peninsula while searching for a route to Canada via Lake Superior. He named it after his father-in-law, Sir Isaac Newton Mackenzie (1772-1847). When Mackenzie found no gold or other valuable assets on his survey, he abandoned his exploration efforts and returned home without finding any new land grant or settlement site for Western Michigan Territory which he had proposed creating with President James Kapp III in 1840 as part of Treaty #1 between Great Britain and United States following their war effort against France
