The town is bordered by Antrim Township to the north, Lapeer County to the east, and Washtenaw County to the south. He named it in honor of George Washington's Mount Vernon plantation near Philadelphia where he had been living before his departure for America on July 4, 1799 as commander of British forces landing at Yorktown following American independence from Great Britain. In 1821, Nicholas Wright built a log house (now part of City Hall) on land that later became Park Avenue south of Main Street; this began what would be known as Wright's Cornfield subdivision which extended from “Dutch Road” (now First Avenue) east to present day Third Street and north to Fourth Street (the original site of State Capitol). Portage is a small town in eastern Michigan, United States. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 707 at the 2010 census. The first known permanent settler in what is now Portage Township was Nicholas Alvord, who arrived in 1837 and built a cabin on the east side of the river. In 1847, John Sibley moved from his home near Battle Creek to homestead land along Wabash River on the west side of the river and began to cultivate rice. In 1862, Isaac Asbury founded as a farmstead and mill on a tributary of Little Wabash River just north of present day Portage Township. By 1865, Asbury had erected mills at Westport and Eastport locations, providing grinding for flour, corn meal, sugar beets, wagon wheels and other goods destined for market or shipment across the state line to Indiana. In 1867 Anthony Jansen settled on land three miles south-southwest of present day downtown Portage Township near modern day Southville; he became one of earliest farmers in that area. In 1872 Ignatius Donnelly established an adjacent post office with mail service from Detroit due to increasing trade between that city and Indiana through Lansing County; this option ended with Donnelly's death in 1902.) When Mifflin Street was surveyed in 1840 by Drury & Company Surveyors (the same surveyors who drew up Michigan's original plat), it ran northeast-southwest from today's corner of Griggs Avenue NE and First Street NW towards what is now Dearborn Heights; it then turned northwest-northeast following what is now Ionia Road before crossing into today's Houghton Township. At that point it continued its northerly course until reaching its current intersection with US Highway 10/US Highway 12 about two miles southeast of where it begins today within present day Houghton Township proper). The first store opened up in this township by Jacob Kappes located at milepost 5 on Mifflin Street hereabouts in 1840 – storekeepers made their own goods available only to those residing within their township limits!
