On November 6th 1870 when US Wabash Railroad reached Portage through Green Bay its directors met to decide what to do next about getting goods into town: "It being generally understood that no railroad could be built through this part of our country without running through Green Bay" they decided to build one instead which began construction on December 15th 1870 with Captain John Ladd acting as engineer and James Purdy as supervisor; $1 million worth of hardware had been ordered but only $4 million had actually been delivered when work stopped due to financial difficulties late in 1871 However soon after new investors arrived venture started again with Captain Ladd leading engineering work continuing until May 1st 1872 when cargo got finally delivered; This time however only 400 feet long engine house project cost $5 million more than initially budgeted so total cost ended up being just over $10 million With further investments projects became available including a water tower (costing $3 million) brick church (costing another $1 million) schoolhouse (costing another $500 thousand) hospital (costing an additional $2 million)and still no railroad so engineers continued working even though money ran out starting on September 16th 1875 When tracks were laid down “the whole village came together” people brought their tools and equipment to help build track crossings while others set up stores near terminal buildings An agreement was reached whereby lumber producers would bring logs into town for processing then transport back out again leaving enough wood standing around town for housing development also resulted In 1886 local farmers established a cooperative millinery business What is now known as Whitefish Lake State Park began operations at this location For years prior access to most things within easy walking distance either consisted of driving downstate where prices were much higher or purchasing items from catalogues usually shipped overnight After 1906 restrictions placed upon commercial shipping caused problems thus becoming known as "The Scenic Route" Regulations changed allowing importation both fresh produce & machinery although still no railway so industry slowly died off Starting around 1915 products became electronically mailed directly from company headquarters rather than via truck As railroads improved transportation methods gradually evolved looking back at past there wasn't really anything we couldn't do so I think its safe to say scope mount history is pretty interesting!

In 1870, construction began on what would become known as Brown's Ferry Bridge across Lake Superior. This crossing became an important transportation artery connecting Chicago with northern Minnesota and western Michigan. The town grew rapidly during World War II due to military production at Ford Motor Company's Dearborn Heights plant. Because of this growth, Portage had to establish a public works program to maintain roads and bridges, expand housing stock (including a municipal waterworks), build stores and other civic infrastructure, and provide social services such as health care and education. In 1951, after more than 50 years of service as a porttown (a distinction conferred upon it by then-Governor George Romney), Portage merged with neighboring Racine into one municipality under Mayor John Ritchie. With its growing population density – greater than that found in any other UPPERCASTERN Michigan city – Portage experienced rapid growth during the 1960s and 1970s thanks in part to federal funding for Economic Development Zone developments throughout rural northwestern Michigan which then attracted new job seekers from nearby towns like Marquette Junction (to the south) or Hollandale (to the northeast). During this time period also saw major development along State Road 901 which runs through downtownPortage providing access both northward via I-94 Exit 97A/SR 901W into Detroit Township to Grand Rapids County southeastward into Battle Creek County beyond; as well as southward onto US-12E towards Sault Ste Marie Today much of what once characterized downtownPortage has been replaced with high rise buildings leased or sold out multiple times annually lease values reaching up near $500 million
In the 1800s, Portage was a thriving community that supported many businesses and people. The town was located on the southern shore of the Detroit River, and it had a busy trade route with other villages along the river. Some of the early settlers in Portage included David Herter and his family, Isaac Bowman, John Sibley, Nathan Kilpatrick, and others. The town enjoyed a period of prosperity from 1800 to 1810 because of its natural resources such as coal and lumber. However, during this time some residents started to move away for various reasons including financial instability caused by land speculation; increased competition from other towns around Michigan; changes in political conditions in neighboring states; and war-time shortages of food and goods. In 1812, when Anthony Wayne became governor of Michigan, he ordered all communities along the Detroit River to disband because he felt they were no longer contributing anything to society. Many residents who remained in Portage elected officials to help keep it alive until it was finally disbanded in 1816.
