In 1898, a company named Winchester produced their first bolt action rifle in Portage. It was called the Model 1895. This rifle saw service with many different organizations throughout America before being replaced by the Model 1903 in WWII. After WWII, production of these rifles stopped as handguns took over as the mainstay of American firearm sales. Portage is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Grand Traverse Bay Bridge connecting Michigan and Wisconsin. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,827. The name for Portage comes from "Ponce de Leon," who explored this area in 1543. The first settler in what is now Portage Township was a man named Nicholas Weiser in 1814. He built a log cabin on what is now the corner of Main and Elm Streets. A year later, he married Eliza Smith and they started to farm land around their log cabin. By 1826, they had five children: John (1825-1912), Hannah (1827-1893), Nicholas (1829-1907), Anna Maria (baptized December 12, 1830), and Martha Ann (May 30, 1833 – May 3, 1906). In 1836, John Weiser died suddenly at age 38 while out plowing his farm with his sons Nicholas and Hannah;Eliza remarried two years later to George Haggerty Sr., also an farmer in that area at that time. In 1840 Eliza's husband George Haggerty Jr., along with their daughter Martha Ann went into exile due to religious persecution by the United States government following the Mexican–American War; they eventually settled in Waukesha County, Wisconsin Territory where they raised chickens until their emigration to Canada in 1865 when America became a republic under Abraham Lincoln’s new Administration led by James Buchanan as president of Mexico City; Martha Ann Haggerty died there of tuberculosis before reaching Canada proper however her father did live long enough to see his granddaughter grow up into an accomplished woman born Mary Alice Grosse about 1865 near Montreal Ontario Canada.) In 1854 portage township was organized as one precinct within Washtenaw County when it was created from parts of Ottawa Township eastward including part of what is now downtown Kalamazoo which lay beyond present day US 16th Street on the bay shoreline between Muskegon Lake and Mackinac Island north of downtown Detroit; except for these tiny slices off present day Michigan shoreline each township continued to exercise jurisdiction over its own precincts until 1938 when all but one were merged into Washtenaw County through judicial court decision reversion back to earlier boundaries during World War II era because so much development had taken place within those borders since then! The first post office called Portage began operating on July 1st 1870 under direction from Commissioners Isaac Christensen & Ebenezer Prentice along with Samuel Shafer who operated a store at Saginaw Road just east side of current US Highway 2nd Street) In 1890 State surveyor Augustus Earle published "A Plan for Points Alongthe Grand Traverse Bay" which included plans for four settlements or villages situated on either side of modern day I-94/I-75 corridor stretching south from Escanaba towards Lansing center: "Portage", "Niles Heights", "Milford Heights" & even further downriver at Point Defiance - future Racine subdivision would be located immediately east or northeast along I-94 corridor after referendum results showed overwhelming support among local voters for towns/villages planned near Racine Avenue intersection! Eleanor Roosevelt stopped by Portage while she was traveling thru upper MI en route home from Battle Creek via Jackson Hole National Forest stopping at White Lodge resort on September 16th 1936 during her official presidential campaign stop tour

PORTAGE, MI - In 1836, the first attempt was made to build a road from Detroit to Portage. The venture failed and no further attempts were made until 1871 when a group of fur traders set out on foot from Detroit and reached the site of present-day Portage. The original trail followed the current course of the River Snelling. After spending several weeks walking its length, the party arrived at an impassable swamp where they decided not to continue their journey any further. The first portage on what is now known as Michigan's west coast was built over this natural obstacle by means of earth ramps and bridges. After many years of construction, the final portion of what is now Michigan's west coast became open to traffic in 1901 when Central Avenue was built between Lansing and Grand Rapids. Over time, other highways have been constructed in close proximity to Warehouse Road making it easy for drivers to get around town and into neighboring townships.
Portage is a town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It was part of the Detroit Metropolitan Area until it was annexed by Lansing in 2006. The town of Portage was established in 1834 as a point of entry into the Upper Peninsula for fur traders working out of Fort Gratiot on the Great Lakes. The first post office opened in 1836. The present day town was platted in 1868 when members of the Brush and Rice families donated land to become a community. The name is derived from French portage meaning "to cross over." The first schoolhouse in Portage was built in 1836 and burned down in 1840. A new schoolhouse was completed in 1847 and served as the main school building until 1912 when it became an opera house. In 1907, a Baptist church also began serving residents and continued to do so until 1966 when it merged with another church to form what is now called First Congregational United Church of Christ (FCUCC). In 1908, construction began on what would become one of Portage's most iconic landmarks – the original Detroit River Bridge which crossed over the river just east of town center. This bridge remained open until 1964 when it closed due to poor conditions following years of heavy usage by commuters travelling between Lansing and Detroit. The current bridge replaced the original structure which is still standing today at its original location just south of downtown Portage. In 1936, steel mills were erected along Front Street north of town center and soon after many businesses located near these mills opened their doors including groceries store President's Grocery & Meat Market (now known as PNC Plaza), dry goods store Eager House Bazaar, laundry shop Third National Laundry Company, barbershop Empire Barber Shop (now known as Belle Tire), bakery Knoepfle's Bakery & Cafe (now known as Joe's Pizza Place), post office Lewis Post Office (now known as Walmart) and several other small businesses including garage sales
