Portage, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Shiawassee County. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Portage Township was Levi Coffin on July 16, 1837. He named it after his father-in-law, George Washington Carpenter, who had come overland from Virginia that year with his family. In 1839, John Fenton purchased land east of present-day Portage and developed it into a town called Fentonville. In 1847, David Swayne built a gristmill on the White River southwest of present-day downtown Portage and started to grind flour for local merchants and farmers. soon afterwards he erected a store building which still stands within the limits of today's downtown." In 1850, John Pritchard came overland from Canada and settled in what is now north central Shiawassee County along the White River near present day Wexford Junction (). By 1860 there were 300 residents in this area." John Swayne died in 1863 and was buried at Cedar Creek Cemetery northeast of town near where he had founded his mill

Red dot sight technology began to evolve in the early 1990s when American contractor IMI developed a design for an accurate rifle sighting system using a rotating green light as the aiming point. The system was first tried on an experimental weapon called the USAS-12B “Prey” which was designed by John Deere & Co., president Theodore Roosevelt’s private gun company. The USAS-12B proved successful on limited trials, but development of a more permanent Red Dot Sight went ahead with IMI’s help. The original reddot sight had two lenses, one focused on the image plane and one focused on infinity or some other object within 100 yards (91 meters). A second lens was added later to correct for magnification differences between riflescopes at different powers.Today, most red dots use either 4 or 6 lenses with each having its own individual focusing range (depending upon magnification), making it possible to target specific objects much closer than ever before. This greatly reduces accuracy issues caused by recoil distortion created by larger objective sizes on older riflescopes; also accuracy is improved because shooters do not have to guess what size hole their round will hit at any given distance - they can simply aim at the center of the red dot photocell! Portage, Michigan is a small town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-East Grand Rapids-Wixom metropolitan area. The first known settler in what is now Portage was George Findlay on July 6, 1794. He and his family moved from Canada to what is now Akron, Ohio. When the Erie Canal was built through central Michigan in 1825, business increased as travelers could get to Detroit by boat rather than going through western Pennsylvania or upriver to Lake Superior. With new transportation options came new opportunities for development and growth within the town limits. While there were other settlements established along both sides of the canal before Portage became settled, it was primarily due to Captain John Sibley’s efforts that this community emerged as one of its more important ports on the Great Lakes region during its early years. Sibley purchased land that he donated for a post office and tavern which served as a commercial center for local farmers and fishermen until it burned down in 1868; however, he continued to donate land until his death in 1865. In 1886, when US Highway 12 (today's M-6) crossed over from Canada into U.S., developers decided that an interchange with M-6 would be beneficial so they built one just north of where Sibley had donated his land thirty years earlier; today’s I-196 provides access Drive east/west from Portage towards Downtown Dearborn Heights while also serving as an access road leading into Sibley Village which encompasses most of what are today blocks A & B on Washington Avenue between First Street and Second Street west of River Road. Bridges were later built across the Kawkaweena River near present day downtown Kalamazoo providing yet another crossing point for motorists entering/ exiting Michigan from Canada while still remaining accessible by those living within town limits; these bridges remain active attraction today as part of State Route 231 (now I-96). There have been two fires that destroyed portions or all of portions of buildings within town limits: The first such fire took place on November 10th 1910 when a short distance south west of Main Street opposite Block G - just south sideof Schoolhouse Lane - a largeCacheam Fire caused extensive damage especially around School House Lane where many homes were lost including those belonging to Mrs Champion who resided three doors east along Main Street next door to her husband Dr Henshawe Champion ohio who managed their store located at 410 N Main St which also caught fire subsequent repairs cost $1,500 each however no insurance ever came available so Mrs Champion lost everything she owned not including her home again until 1951 when she sold it back acouple blocks away along Commercial Avenue Bridge No longer exists but can still be seen if you go out around corner onto MLK Boulevard South facing MLK Drive Wallace Goldsmith antiques & memorabilia currently occupies much space inside former grocery store now apartments building

The first permanent European settlement in Portage Township was a cabin built by Frenchmen in 1795. The township was organized on March 10, 1834, from parts of Macomb and Wayne counties. It was named for John Ransom, an American Territorial surveyor who had surveyed the area in 1823. In 1837, the United States acquired land west of Detroit through the Michigan Purchase Agreement. This included Portage Township and part of Ashtabula County. In 1840, the town of Saginaw was founded in what is now east-central Michigan by Canadian fur traders working for the Hudson's Bay Company. After Saginaw failed to take off, other fur traders established settlements in what is now Portage Township but it became a part of Washtenaw County until it was transferred to Lansing County in 1834. In 1861, when Washtenaw and Oakland Counties were created from portions of Macomb and Wayne counties, Portage Township became a part of Washtenaw County as well. The township lost its independent identity after that time and most residents moved to Lansing or Muskegon Counties during the late 19th century.
