Also located near this time were several businesses such as a bakery, millinery store, Potawatomie Agency gin distillery and three churches: First Presbyterian Church (now Holy Trinity Cathedral), Methodist Episcopal Church (now Saint Anselm United Methodist Church) and African American Baptist Churches Fellowship Chapel (later known as Gospel Hall). In 1916-17, Portage became one of six cities that participated in construction of the Saginaw Valley Railroad through western Wayne County including Dearborn Heights, Farmington Hills and Orion Township; this project increased industrial production along with suburban development throughout southwestern Michigan due eastward into Ontario County including Flint & Holland but also reaching beyond into Stark County including Battle Creek & Houghton Harbor until finally terminating at Toronto Junction just south of Saginaw City Limits; while much remains unchanged today regarding architecture or demographics specific to each community participating therein such as soccer fields being located adjacent to heavy industry parks etc., Streetscape projects have been initiated/completed throughout various portions thereof over time e.g.; Belding Drive • Enterprise Road • Wickham Place Blvd., Lansingburgh Rd.—a former rail yard—to name but a few examples involving various pedestrian improvements/enlivenment schemes allowed for public access along established routes rather than solely private property lines resulting in some very impressive skyline views from many parts of town even today! An interesting footnote about Portage’s involvement with railroad infrastructure can be found at Warden Avenue School just east off I-75 exit 145 which served as both engine house(s) localizing locomotive movements during late1920s thru early 1930s although no longer extant having been demolished sometime after World War II; these days you will find remnants remaining underground inside present day Little save District Court building constructed following same general pattern circa 1950!
