Portage, Michigan is a city located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the St. Clair River. It is known for its leather industry and for being home to the world's largest fiberglass storage facility. The city was founded by General David Dixon in 1824 as a fur trading post on the upper Missisauga River. It became an agricultural center around 1830, when landowner John McNaught developed a new irrigation system that diverted water from the river to raise crops near his farmstead. In 1836, Dixon moved the fur-trading posts to what is now downtown Portage, and in 1840 he built a brick courthouse and jail. In 1865, industrialists Isaac Woodward and James Wirt bought land at what is now town limits; they began manufacturing steamboats with paddle power from their shipyards there. In 1868, they erected a large frame schoolhouse which remains standing today. By 1870, Portage had become one of the leading cotton textile towns in America. At this time, it also became one of the few places in North America where glass was produced commercially In 1892, Appleton Glass Works opened nearby; it would be instrumental in creating local glass production throughout much of American history. In 1906, Detroit Edison donated land to Portage so that local manufacturer George Eastman could build his first electric plant; this would spur growth within the city's electrical industry over subsequent decades. The city's rich leather industry started up around 1916 when entrepreneurs Harry Brownell and company brought hides into town from out west In 1954-1955, during McCarthyism hysteria in America (and following revelations about Communist infiltration), Mayor Clyde Ritchie passed ordinances banning all optical products not made by US corporations from sale or use within City limits In 1978-1981, portage district government merged with neighboring Muskegon County government; this created a single governmental entity responsible for all aspects of township/county residents' lives including education and public works The current name given to downtown Portage reflects its previous incarnation as "the pearl" due to its location on one of Michigan's most valuable waterfronts . In 1933, the company moved to a new location on Fourth Avenue in downtown Portage. The store continued to be operated by the Eaton family until it closed in 1984.
Portage, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Washtenaw County. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. It is located on the western shore of Lake Superior opposite Detroit, about 45 miles (72 km) north of Lansing and about 85 miles (137 km) east of Chicago. The city had a total area of 21 square miles (59 km2), making it smaller than many other American cities, such as New York City or Los Angeles. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders in 1699, who named it "Portage" after their trading post on the Great Lakes. The name may be derived from Ojibwe - portage meaning "to cross over" or "to go through." In 1805, US President James Katonah arrived at Portage with his army for what would become known as the War of 1812 against British forces. As part of General Anthony Wayne's camp across from Fort Dearborn, he ordered Lieutenant Colonel John Pemberton to build a stockade around what is now downtown Portage so that enemy troops could not enter or leave without being detected. In 1808, the town was platted by Nicholas Morse and others under US Patent No 24267; it became a small village called Northport when incorporated as a village in 1827 by act of Congress no 1 de Grasse et al., also styled United States Village No 2 Portage Township within Washtenaw County The first store in town was built by George Hennepin on Commercial Street in 1830; later this business moved to First Avenue between State Street and Main Street which became known as Merchants Row It was not until 1863 that an electric light company began service here using power generated from an engine located near present-day Park Drive The old brick courthouse burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt soon afterwards In 1888 local resident John Ahern started brewing Schiffer beer here at his brewery which continues today In 1907 local entrepreneur Jerald Healy opened up what would become one of Michigan's largest grocery stores chain known today as Kroger Incorporated Upon His death in 1931 his son Harry ran Kroger for many years before leaving it to his nephew Art Healy who also served briefly during World War II as Admiral Harry S Truman's Deputy Director for Food Programs

In order to improve his vision, John Lennon needed a new pair of glasses after losing his old ones in a fight. He shopped around until he found an outfit supplier who sold him special lenses made from metal that allowed him to see clearly even in low light conditions. However, this was not the first time such lenses had been used for vision enhancement; they had been known since the 15th century. In 1795, Nicholas-Jacques Conte designed a lens called the "Conte Lens." The lens consisted of two pieces that fit together like aoggle buttons and focused sunlight onto objects located behind them so that they could be seen clearly. It was the first lens ever created that could be used for magnification and it became very popular among scientists and military personnel during the Revolutionary War because it helped them see large areas at close range better than before. In 1827, James Clerk Maxwell discovered waves travelling in straight lines: these were later named natural or Physical Laws after then-British physicist James Clerk Maxwell (1879-1955). By understanding how waves behaved under certain circumstances, he was able to develop theoretical models which helped explain how light behaves both as an object passes through air molecules and as waves travel through space. These theories led to his invention of wave optics – one of the earliest forms of modern optical engineering! In 1892, Julius Cäsar Röntgen discovered X-rays while working on radiation therapy for cancer patients at Kaiser Wilhelm Hospital in Berlin. This discovery led to new ways of seeing things by providing information about what is inside objects without havingto try to understand how those objects worked! He named this type of radiation treatment "X-ray photography." However, it wasn’t until 1926 when German scientist Heinrich Hertz published his theory on radioactivity that we realized X-rays could also be used for sightseeing! Since then, all sorts of amazing technologies have been developed based on optics including digital cameras, 3D printing technology, contact lenses and more! So much has changed over the years that it’s hard to keep up with all of it – but hopefully this paper will give you some idea about just how incredible optical technology has become throughout its lifespan!

Portage is a town in Sandusky County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Portage Township were Campbell andfamily from Scotland. They started out wagoning around this area and trading with the natives. In 1854, John MacDonald built a cabin on current-day Prairie Road near where he still resides today. From this cabin, MacDonald began to trade goods with Native Americans along the Maumee River for their hides, scalps, and other items they produced. He also developed a relationships with some of the local men and women who would later help form his business empire as timber merchants in the region. In 1875, Alexander McMillin established a sawmill on Big Creek east of present-day Portage Heights in what is now town limits outside of town limits (now within city limits). This mill became one of the most important economic engines in community life and allowed better access to lumber resources which had been difficult to come by before due to geography or tree competition among larger businesses. The mill was also instrumental in helping build homes around town beginning in the early 19th century which increased residential activity around town while providing jobs for people who lived thereabouts full time during those years; something that has not been repeated since then thanks to suburban growth throughout much of Michigan! In 1906 Drs Arthur Prentice and Lewis Warshaw bought land north of present-day downtown from William Bednarik for $1 million dollars ($ as of 2018). This land included about two-thirds of present day downtown Portage Heights although only about one block south thereof was developed as housing until recently (See photo below). At first they named their new venture "Prentice & Warshaw" but soon decided against it because it sounded too similar to existing commercial enterprises located just east of them in Detroit at that time called "Arthur Prentice & Co." However they did continue using that name through most if not all their years operating out there until finally changing it back to its original spelling when they purchased their own building blocks adjacent thereto – once again becoming known simply as "Portage" thereafter!
Portage, Michigan was founded in 1834 by the Potawatomi Indians. The town was named for a small stream that ran through the area. The first post office was established in 1835 and the first store opened in 1836. In 1840, the town had a population of just 12 people. By 1850, Portage had a population of over 100 people and it grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1907, Portage became a city and it has grown again since then to its current size.
