Stevens Point became a village on January 1, 1870 (), but lost its status as a town until it regained it on November 3, 1903 (). All three branches of the US Military Service had their units located here: Infantry Regiment (1812), Cavalry Regiment (1814), Artillery Regiment (1815). Fort Dearborn () was built here during World War I as part of fortification aroundDetroit while Camp Upton () served as an Army Air Corps training ground during World War II before becoming an industrial plant used by Ford Motor Company until closing down in 1984. Waterfront redevelopment began early with development beginning at Saginaw Bayou close to where today's restaurant "Portage Place" stands and extending inland towards Eastern Market (). After many years of planning and construction starting around 1978-1981 by local entrepreneurs/ Developers Gordon MacPherson & James Laughlin (), new over 35 businesses were opened up within just two blocks or so radius including several high end restaurants such as The Ritz Carlton Hotel (), JW Marriott hotel (), Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant (), Applebees restaurant (); Foot Locker store (); Assorted other retailers like Sears department store (); Quality Inn Motel ()); Denny's Restaurants ()); Tim Hortons Coffee Shop ()); General Motors Plant (); Medical Imaging Facility (); GM Research Laboratory ()) According to 2010 Census data, there are 2,719 people living in Portage Township making it one of Michigan's most populous townships (>75% White). With nearly half that number being under age 25 (<25%), Portage Township has many areas where younger generations can get involved in social services or take care of their families while still developing into adulthood – something that is increasingly important given that traditional workplaces have been moving out faster than ever before for younger workers looking for opportunities outside those traditional settings

Portage is a small town in the Ottawa-Kankakee County, Illinois area, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first known permanent resident of Portage was Joseph Potter who arrived in 1811 from Maryland. In 1821, Isaac Niles ran a ferry service across the Kankakee River to get goods to and from Champaign, Illinois. In 1825, Nicholas Hennepin established a store here and started trading with Indians in what is now Kane County. In 1827–28, George Stephenson built a passenger train Line 1 between Normal and Warsaw stations on his Stephenson Railroads company which connected with Michigan Central Railroad mainline atNormal. The first locomotive on this line was built by John Fenton in 1830 as "George Stephenson No. 5". In 1840–41, Augustus Biddle founded an iron works here that became one of the largest employers in town. He also founded the first school in Portage (now Northport) and donated land for it. In 1850s and 1860s, many farmers moved into Portage from surrounding villages because of good soil conditions hereabouts and easy access to water supplies; some continue to live there today as well as some who have passed away since then such as General James Swayne during World War II or President Gerald Ford during his time in office). A post office called "Portage" was established at this location on November 10th1863 by Aafrankahomed Wetherbee (the son of white settler Elijah Wetherbee), after he had traveled through this area with his father wagon carrying goods necessary for building speculations about land grants east of Kankakee River finding nothing having been offered theretoon but adverse reports returned home Assured him that there would be great wealth waiting discovery thereof if he should enter into any beneficial contract: Accordingly he set out from Normal March 6th1863 for what proved eventually to be over 1000 miles long journey unassisted only receiving food along way however upon arrival near Green Bay April 3rd found himself within 500 miles cf Great Lakes navigable waters – Kit Carson river being no obstacle whatever
