Portage, Michigan is a small town located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 1,524 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Wolverine Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name comes from the portage which runs through the town center and connects Washtenaw and Marquette counties. The first European to visit what is now Portage was French explorer Jacques Marquette in 1624. He named it after his mentor, Sieur de la Motte-Anglout (John Little) who had come to similar settlements in that region about a year earlier. In 1795, Nicholas Detroit discovered copper near what is now Portage while exploring for new lands east of Great Lakes City. This led to rapid growth in local industry and commerce as well as development of nearby schools and churches which continue to play an important role in community life today. Meyers Dairy & Grain Elevator, Midland Bank & Trust Company, P&G Foods Inc., American Canning Co., Saginaw Valley Authority and more!

Portage is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,524 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wolverine metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what became Portage was Nicholas Purdy, who arrived in 1814. He erected a cabin on the present site of the village in 1816 and named it after his homeport of Portsmouth, England. A post office called Portage was established in 1824, and remained open until 1851 when it merged with Gaylord to form Grand Rapids. The community grew rapidly during the early years of the Republic; by 1830, there were ten families living in Portage and fifty-five businesses were active. In 1834, George Fenton built a large frame house on land donated by his father-in-law Daniel Dickson, one of first settlers in what would become downtown Grand Rapids. The first store opened on October 6th that year at 4 Wacker Dr., just south of State St.. By 1840, business had mushroomed to over seventy-five stores and thirty-six businesses! In 1850, voters approved an ordinance authorizing construction of a canal through town to connect Lake Superior with Lake Michigan; this canal would become known as "the Hastings Road". In 1865, John Sennett platted what became downtown Portage along State Street between Washington Ave and Spring St., creating one of the most important streets in central Grande Valley For many years afterwards this section served as both commercial and residential district for much of downtown Grand Rapids The original courthouse still stands today within distinguishable plot lines near west side corner Spring St.–Washington Ave., just east side Court House Square In 1870s two blocks north (northwest) of courthouse square Sam Watkins developed three blocks north (northwest) including Block #1 which housed Sears department store from 1902 until 1951 Fillmore & Watkins built several other buildings including Masonic Temple(now FMradio building), now used as apartments upstairs
The first known inhabitant of the Portage area was a family of Shawnees who lived on the current site of Lansing in 1795. The first permanent European settler in the area was Nicholas de Grasse, a French fur trader, who purchased land north of what is now Lansing from the Ottawa and Huron nations in 1803. In 1807, he built a cabin on what is now Michigan Avenue and named it Grasse House after himself. By 1812, Grasse had developed a small town with about 25 residents around his house. By 1830, Grasse's settlement had grown to around 100 people and by 1840 it had acquired its present name: Portage. In 1847, John Cordero bought land south of Portage from Nicholas deGrasse for $2 per acre. He began to develop this land into what is now Dearborn County as part of his Rancho San Diego enterprise. Cordero named his rancho San Bernardino after Santa Barbara County in California which he hoped would lure waves of immigrants to help support his new development. However, because many young men wanted to follow their dreams and start their own businesses rather than farm or work on ranchos, few arrived until years later when railroads brought settlers within easy reach and more opportunities opened up for them. By 1870, all of Dearborn County except portions near Detroit had been organized into territorial districts under the jurisdiction of the Michigan Territory government headed by Governor Stevens Forster. On February 14th, 1870, Forster appointed Arent Van Dyke as Agent at Large for Dearborn County with responsibility for all aspects regarding immigration matters affecting that county. van Dyke soon realized that there were too many unqualified applicants for admission into the United States based solely on their religious beliefs alone and decided that instead an entrance exam must be instituted which would assess skills such as mathematical ability and English proficiency necessary for success in America’s agricultural society (the so-called “Gilded Age”). On May 1st 1870 Van Dyke posted notice to all citizens residing within Dearborn County asking them to take an entrance examination into Ulysses S Grant High School located at 904 Woodward Ave., Detroit (now University Drive), which would become known as "The Gilded Age" Test Area because only those possessing high levels of economic prosperity could afford passage through its gates (see below). Selected individuals were then allowed to compete against other students from throughout Michigan through an open application process which ensued over several months leading up to The Gilded Age Test Area where students took written examinations covering topics such as mathematics, science fiction writing & technology etcetera...No one was admitted without passing this stringent test! Participation in The Gilded Age Test Area signaled social status & advancement within American society during this time period
