Portage, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 7,478 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Ottawa River, about south of Detroit. The first settler in what would become Portage was George Stevenson in 1817. He and his family began to trade with the Potawatomi Indians and were able to build a trading post on the site in 1825. The post served as a stopping point for traders from Detroit who took goods upriver to sell at points farther downriver. In 1830, John Butterfield founded a wagon journey across Canada that became known as the Great Western Road and passed through Portage on its way eastward. In 1834, landowner Nicholas Clark donated 4 acres (1 km2) of land at the mouth of the Ottawa River to be used as an agricultural community called Portage Township. The township's first settler was Isaac Eaton who built a log cabin there in 1835-36. In 1870, while still part of Clark's township, more than 100 people bought 1/4 acre (0.18 km2) lots along both banks of the river for $1 per acre (0.08 km2). These settlers formed what would become downtown Portage which developed rapidly during this time due to its location close to transportation and businesses related to logging and agriculture; it remains one of America's most industrial areas today despite having only 807 residents at its 2010 census count. During World War II many citizens volunteered their services within local military services or served outside United States confines; among these were many veteran portagers such as Lawrence "Larry" Kapp Jr., program director for Veterans Affairs Regional Service Office Southeast Michigan Command Headquarters - now Gratiot County Sheriff’s Department - whose father had been born in nearby Battle Creek.

Portage is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, close to the Canadian border. The population was 7,752 at the 2010 census, up from 5,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Mackinac City metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of what is now Portage were Potawatomi people who migrated southward from Michigan in 1814 after being forced out of their homeland by United States forces under General Anthony Wayne. They built wigwams and hunted game on the site that would become Portage Hill during their migrations; it was not until 1686 that they reached what is now downtown and started to cultivate maize and beans as farmers. In 1795, Captain John Cook charted a course for Discovery Bay which led to what is now southwestern Michigan and he named it "Lake Superior" for his ships' discoveries there in 1792-93. In 1821, Peter Pohl founded a sawmill on Saginaw River near where what is now downtown Portage stands; it became one of the largest sawmills in the country and remains in operation today as Pohl Mills LLC. The town's first store opened its doors on December 12, 1825; this establishment became known as "The Store on Heckscher Street". By 1830, business had increased sufficiently so that construction began on a gristmill which was completed two years later (and allowed Portage its nickname of "Grist Mill Town"). In 1854, when Mackinac County was created from parts of Ottawa County, most notably Muskegon Heights east of Houghton Lake along with much of southeastern Lapeer County including present day Harbor Springs), Portage became an unincorporated community within MCL Township. In 1870 it became an incorporated community subject to MCL Township limits when Lansingburgh Township was organized adjacent to MCL Township boundaries about mile northwest of downtownPortage through purchase by township commissioners from residents thereof who desired separation from Lansingburgh since they considered themselves morePOLITICAL than local citizens living within township limits). A post office operated at this location until 1902 when it moved to Lansingburgh because mail service between MCL Township and Lansingburgh could not be provided From 1902 until 1950 mail service between Portage and Lansingburgh was Provided by United States Mail Corporation utilizing State Highway 3 serving as an intervening route Connecting both townships side by side) From 1950 until 2002 portages post office relocated back into Downtown & continues Current Name: THE POST OFFICE
The first white people to arrive in Michigan were the Hurons, who arrived in 1796. The first permanent Indian settlement was on the Rouge River in what is now Portage Township. A post office called Potosi was established in 1815, and the township was named after Potosi, Ontario, Canada. In 1824, a survey of land in what is now Portage Township was made and it was organized as a borough. The township became an independent republic on July 14, 1837. On January 1, 1840, the name of the township was changed to Portage Township because it lay along Lake Superior between Detroit and Grand Rapids.
