Portage, Michigan is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan that is the county seat for Calhoun County. The population was 5,556 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Miami River, about 26 miles (42 km) northwest of Detroit and 14 miles (22 km) northeast of Lansing. The first Europeans to see Portage were French traders and missionaries who journeyed through the area in 1696-97. The first permanent settler in what is now Portage was James Cosby in 1798. In 1812, Daniel Slater settled there and laid out a town square on the south side of the Miami River which became known as Slater's Crossing. In 1830, Portage became part of Washtenaw County when it was organized from parts of Wayne and Muskegon counties; but it reverted to Calhoun County jurisdiction until 1855 when it became a part of due east Michigan Territory under territorial governor Moses Swayne. When this territory was subdivided into townships beginning in 1867, Portage remained unincorporated within each township until it became an incorporated city on July 1, 1897 by ordinance of its Township Council; then it continued as an unincorporated community within each township until its incorporation into City Hall on July 1, 1997 by Ordinance No. 9463-97 §1(a). Prior to its incorporation into City Hall, Portage had one form or anotherof government since 1897: unincorporated village/township government with no municipal powers save for election to Township Councils; or incorporated city government with all municipal powers except for representation on City Councils

Portage is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kent County and part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Portage Township was Nicholas Hildebrandt on Aug. 10, 1837. The town was formed from parts of Muskegon and Ottawa counties on Jan. 1, 1847 by an act of the Michigan Legislature entitled "An Act to Divide and Confederate Kent County with Other Counties in This State." The original courthouse in Portage was built on the corner of Main Street (now National Avenue) and Mifflin Street in 1848-49 by Augustus Calkins and was destroyed by fire on Feb 25, 1850; it reopened June 13th, 1850 under new management by John Fenton who also remodeled the main building into a theater which still stands today (the current theater building replaced an earlier movie house). On July 16th 1863 Union General George Armstrong Custer's troops attacked and destroyed Fort Gratiot west of present day Portage while withdrawing from Detroit after their victory over Confederate General Robert E Lee at Gettysburg two weeks earlier; as a result manyuga trees were planted along both sides of Main Street as commemorations of this event which remain to this day.
The Portage, Michigan area has been inhabited by the Pottawatomie people since at least 1600 AD. The first white settlers in the area arrived in 1814, when a group of Ohio settlers founded the town of Steubenville on the east side of the river. The settlement was destroyed by Native Americans in 1816, and no new settlements were established until after American Revolutionary War. The first permanent European settler in what is now Portage County was Nathaniel Banks, who built a log cabin near present day Gaylord on December 22, 1796. Banks and his family were among the earliest Europeans to reside in what is now Michigan; he purchased land from Chief Wabash for $4 per acre. In 1798, Banks died as a result of an accidental fall from a horse while hunting near modern day Lansing. He was buried at Little Canada Cemetery in Ypsilanti Township.
