In that year, a group of settlers named LaFontaine founded the town of Portage on the Detroit River. By 1815, it had grown to include a few hundred people. In 1836, when Michigan became a state, Portage became one of its seven townships. It remained an agricultural community until after World War II when industry began to take hold in the area. By 1830, most of present-day Portage had been developed and named for Captain John CRAWFORD who surveyed and called the town Bay City on his return from a survey trip through this region in 1825/26; afterwards known as Crawford Point or Landing on Miami River (now Roscommon). In 1836, George HARDWICK purchased about two-thirds interest in the town from Capt’n Crawford for $1,000 cash + $500 per annum until death or donation given plus one dollar annual rent until such time as Hardwick could be sure title would remain with him & no alienation possible without written agreement between himself & settler commissioners appointed annually

Portage, Michigan is a town in Midland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Portage was Abraham Lincoln who moved from Illinois in 1837 and started a store at the junction of the Grand River and Michigamme Rivers. A post office called Portage was established in 1851, and remained in operation until it closed on July 15, 1906. The village of Portage was platted in 1862 by Elisha Hutchinson and others while they were traveling through the area on their way to Mackinac Island. They named it after George Washington's favorite stop on his trip down the Great Lakes region during his presidency. The village quickly grew into a busy agricultural center with several mills and stores producing hay, flour, cottonseed oil, potatoes and other goods for local markets. By 1875 more than 100 families lived there with a total population of 2200 people. In 1916-17 when World War I began many residents fled Midwest Railroading Company's (WCR) operations along the Upper Peninsula to join up with troops fighting abroad; this left portages commerce almost completely unharmed as most goods transported by rail were trucked back home or shipped via boat across Lake Superior arriving at docks near Marquette before being unloaded onto barges for storage or shipment to points eastward. However WCR reopened its operations soon after hostilities ended; this time transporting munitionss directly from war-ravaged Europe to Ulysses S Grant's new eastern theater of operations). In 1925 WCR merged with another railroad company formed specifically for this purpose - Erie Railway Company - which left portages commercial district largely untouched until 1948 when Amtrak purchased WCR parent company Peregrine Lines/Erie Railroad Corporation operating service beyond Marquette into Holland Township east of Motor City limits creating what is now known as "the old line".
