Portage, Michigan is a small town located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated municipality in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The village was founded in 1859 by contractors who were working on a new railroad line between Detroit and Chicago. The village became an agricultural community with a large flour mill and other businesses. It was designated as a national Historic Landmark in 1978. Portage is one of several villages that make up Sandusky Township, which is adjacent to the lower peninsula of Michigans entire lower peninsula including Ingham County and most of Bay county. The first settler in what would become Portage was John Kline who arrived there around 1800 A.D.. He built a log cabin on the present site of town and named it after his father, Peter Kline (1755-1812). Over time, other pioneers followed suit until by 1859 all but three residents had moved to Portage from different parts of Upper Michigan: Alain de La Salle (a Frenchman), George Fenton (a British immigrant), and David Lathrop (an American). The first store opened in 1861 when Jno Hite started selling groceries from his grocery wagon parked outside the Methodist church on Main Street corner with State Street(now Arens Road). It remained an agricultural community until it became an industrial center during World War II with heavy reliance on shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing. The city of Detroit began to take shape around Portage in the early 20th century thanks to its location at the mouth of the River Rouge and its access to shipping and trade routes. The city grew rapidly due to auto production which commenced in 1908 with Henry Ford’s starting of his company in Highland Park and continued through World War II with plants at Willow Run and Flint Hills near Lansing
The first permanent settler in the area was a man named John Stevens, who arrived in 1795. In 1812, the community of Portage was founded by David Wilkinson and his family. The town quickly grew and became an important commercial center for the region. In 1834, a school was built in the town and it served as the primary educational facility for local children up until World War II. The town also played an important role in the development of Michigan’s agricultural industry.
