The first Europeans to visit what is now Portage were French traders who explored this region in 1692 when they sailed downriver from Canada. In 1814, General James Kossuth's army invaded Michigan and destroyed most of Fort Michilimackinac on the Upper Great Lakes, including what is today Portage City. In 1836, following Government Indian Removal policy, many Native Americans were forced out of their homes and into exile across North America via wagon trains known as "The Trail of Tears". Many died along the way including several hundred people who perished at an abandoned fur trade post near present day White Road in Muskegon County called Sandusky Rock (now known as Elim). A plaque commemorates this event located at that site: "Here Died These 400 People In 1836." A year later, following again Government Indian Removal policy, another group of Native Americans was driven out onto reservations across central Michigan with accompanying violence and destruction which remains one of history's most notorious massacres perpetrated against indigenous peoples living within U.S borders today; more than three thousand individuals lost their lives according to various estimates over eight days leading up to November 30th, 1839 – also known as Black Hawk Day or Treaty Day Massacre events throughout western US history due to their impact on local Métis populations then numbering just under 5%, between them and 7% after European contact approximately 14 years earlier In 1840–41 local physician Samuel Morse opened his first dispensary outside Detroit for health care for native American refugees resettlement being conducted by The United States government under President John Tyler pursuant to Executive Order 9 th . The organization moved its main office from Detroit to Lansing soon afterwards where it would remain until finally closing shop due to financial difficulties some 40 years later ‌ In 1865-66 when Huron National Forest was created northcentral MI & included much of What are now Monroe County—Portage became part of that new forest & it still has a presence there today! Portage is a small town in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, located on the north shore of Lake Michigan. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of Muskegon Township. The first inhabitants were two groups of Algonquian Indians who called themselves the "Nottoway" and "Ojibwe". In 1692, French traders discovered an area that would become Portage when they explored what is now Lower Michigan. The first permanent settler was Nicholas de Grasse, a French fur trader who came to the region in 1701 with his brother-in-law Pierre Marquette. After years of exploration and trade, Grasse became one of the first Europeans to find land along the lower Great Lakes. He named his new settlement after François Péchereau, superintendent for Canada at this time. In 1807, John Condon founded Superior Mines near present day Portage while working as an engineer for General Wayne County Road District No. 2 construction project under contract from United States War Department (USWDC). Construction began in fall 1807 and finished by winter 1808/09 based on Condon's estimate that mines could be opened by early summer 1809 if necessary reliance on slave labor only cost $8 per month increase over pay raised prices for white men during period leading up to war with Mexico; contractor received no double pay or other benefits during Mexican War era due to lack thereof for Ulysses S Grant's army commanders occupying Detroit & other northern cities during conflict During American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), Battle of Fallen Timbers took place near modern day Portage between Patriot militia forces commanded by Colonel Lewis Cass and royalist troops led by Major George Washington which resulted in British capture of Fort Dearborn which later served as garrison for Royalist forces until it surrendered October 15th 1781 just before spring campaign ended shifted control over Detroit to Continental Army under Commander Peter Collier Following American Revolution both France ceded Upper Canada back to Britain but kept residual rights including right to import liquor into Upper Canada through its portages forming Grosse Pointe–St Clair colony where Americans established their own customs house French traders continued operations until 1800s post American Revolution when development stalled because too many European immigrants tried farming instead; major ore resources developed here included iron ore, lead and zinc

The first portage in Portage County was made on the Menominee River by the French in 1701. The next portage was made on the Kawkawksaw River by Major John St. Clair in 1734. The third and final portage was made on the Maumee River by General Anthony Wayne in 1814.
