Portage, Michigan is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Harrison County area of the United States. The population was 609 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Wyoming, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to arrive in what is now Portage were fur traders from Sweden in 1805. The community was named after John Portage and his family who came overland from Canada that year. In 1821, James Kapp founded a gristmill on the White River near where it flows into Lake Huron. By 1830, there were five stores and twelve households in the town. In 1835, a group of Methodist missionaries arrived in Portage and started preaching Christianity to the local Indians and their families. After one year of preaching, they left for unknown reasons. A Presbyterian church was built in 1865 and remained operational until 1978 when it burned down. The first school was built in 1827 by Revs Peter Halsey (a slaveholder) and John Brown (a Methodist). The present day high school building was completed in 1922 as part of a larger project to improve infrastructure around the town center including new roads, sewers, water systems, public baths (now called "The Gables"), a library/theatre/museum complex and additional housing developments which replaced most of the original buildings throughout its history including: The Gables Park; Pioneer Square; Main Street; Church Avenue; Factory Row; Thalia Terrace; Highland Place North; Canal Place West; Cedar Pointe East.; Keystone Place South.; Harbour View Drive North.(now Beach Boulevard);(later known as Cherry Hill Road)); Harbor View Drive South.(now Bayview Drive)). In 1937 an agricultural fair was held at Veterans Stadium which remains one of Portage's most popular events today with more than 5k spectators attending every year since then! Portage is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Grand River between Lake Superior and Ontario County. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settler in what became Portage Township was John Nicholson in 1824. The township was organized on February 14, 1827 by act of the Michigan legislature under the name "Portage Township." The name has been variously given to various portions of present-day Michigan: "Alanson", "Belleville", "Canandaigua", "Emmonsburg", etc., but it is currently spelled Portage with an initial P. The land for which Portage Township was formed was donated by George Stephenson to create what is now Muskegon Heights, MI on November 3, 1837 as part of a large grant from Stephenson to help settle new areas in central and southern Michigan following his construction of the Erie Canal. The village that developed around Montrose Road and White Street near where present-day downtown Portage stands (now within city limits) started as a small farming community called Bellefontaine about 1850; it grew rapidly due to transportation improvements made by Stephenson and others during the late 19th century - notably canals connecting Lake Superior with nearby towns and villages along both sides of the river. Portage, Michigan was a small village located in the town of Muskegon Heights on the tip of Peninsula County in the midwest United States. The village was founded in 1836 by a group of men from what is now Grand Rapids, Michigan, who were traveling through the area on their way to sell goods at the then new Detroit market. They named their settlement after John Portage, an American pioneer who had settled near present-day Midland in 1814. The first post office was established in Portage in 1837. It was operated by John Dutton. In 1860, when Muskegon Heights became part ofGrand Rapids and the village became known as Portage Township, it retained its own post office until 1893. In 1870, portages leading into and out of neighboring townships were built to improve shipping traffic between these communities and Detroit. These crossings are still used today as vehicular access roads. In 1896, Grand Rapids annexed portions of east Lansing Township including what is now downtown Muskegon Heights and renamed itself supplantively as "Grand Rapids". As with most things relating to that city's history however, that name stuck around for only a few years before being replaced again by something more definitive within 10 years or so: "Muskegon Heights".
