The town was founded in 1837 by John Nicholson and others as a port on the Detroit River. Grant delivered his famous speech at Ford's Theatre in 1867. Portage is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, and it is part of the Grand Rapids-Wenatchee metropolitan area. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It originated as a small village on the Kawkawa River in 1836, and became a port city when the Detroit-Windsor Canal was built in 1849. In 1870, Portage became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and six council members. The city annexed neighboring villages in 1898. After World War II, Portage grew rapidly as aluminum manufacturing increased; however, because of its proximity to Detroit and other industrial centers, it lost its economic vitality in the 1970s and 1980s. The present day town of Portage was organized on November 3, 1836 by John Fenton as a small village on the Kawkawa River about 12 miles (19 km) north of what is now Grand Rapids. At that time there were only around 100 residents living in what would become Portage proper. By 1850, when construction began on the Detroit-Windsor Canal, Portage had become one of several communities along its route - along with New Buffalo (now Holland), Highland Park (now Warren), Isabella (now Hubbardston), Ionia (later Southfield), Dearborn Heights (later Ann Arbor), and Clinton Township - that sprang up around its proposed terminus at Saginaw Bayou. In 1870, following annexation by neighboring villages of Isabella Township to the east and Highland Park to the west during that year's municipal consolidation process within Wayne County*, which took place after Michigan's admission into Confederation as a new country* - Portage became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and six council members under rule adopted from Quebec City Municipal Act No.#9 of 1865*. Following years of rapid growth due to aluminum production withinportaging community – especially during World War II – local coffers struggled to keep up with mounting expenses associated with developing such an important industry; this contributed to Mayor Harry Crouch’s decision in 1954 not to seek re-election for another term despite having been elected twice before.* The decline experienced by many American cities concurrent with technological advancements throughout much of twentieth century led some observers* including author Loren Coleman* to proclaim "the end" for downtown Detroit† *. However – thanks largely in part to initiatives initiated by then-Mayor Dave Bing– which saw Downtown renamed “PortAGE” District following renovation/updating OFD services inside former Belle Isle Naval Air Station† *; development outside Downtown remains rampant including residential redevelopment taking place adjacent portions of Lake SuperiorfrontWalk & Harborfront Courtyard since 2002 – downtown ‘bustles’ are more limited than ever before** [*see: pics here]. As mentioned earlier*, after World War II heavy aluminum production within portaging community stopped while downtown continued slowly transitioning towards becoming more commercialized [ see: photo below ]; this contributed significantly too recent changes & transformations taking place concurrently affecting nearly every aspect our everyday lives both inside & outside DOWNTOWN *& increasingly referred herein as simply 'downtown'. While many observers proclaimed ‘the end’ for downtown Detroit back then… subsequently things have changed quite remarkably over time (& continue changing today) culminating numerous redevelopments currently ongoing or impending throughout various districts bordering approximately 1/3rd Of Downtown zone still known affectionately amongst locals simply AS DOWNTOWN… [ see: pics here ]. This has resulted whatsoever physical destruction perpetrated both externally thru demolition/erasureof landmark structures e[xcept] for few select exceptions(!!!)over past decades primarily attributable directly or indirectly TO THE OVERALL ACTUAL DEVELOPMENT OF DOWNTOWN rather than any specific event or incident(*!).
The town of Portage was founded in 1834 by a group of pioneers led by Captain John Beech. The town was named for the portage that connected the Upper and Lower Michigan Rivers. The first post office in Portage was established in 1835. In 1854, the town became a village, and in 1870 it became a city.
