Portage is a city in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Ingham County. The city was founded in 1835 by Simon Cameron and others as Portage Landing on the Kawkawa River. As railroads grew larger and more traffic moved through town centers like Portage (and later Lansing), entrepreneurs began to build hotels, theaters, stores and other businesses on prime land around town square or riverfront. During World War I (1914-18), much of present-day Michigan fought in combat including several raids into Canada byCaptain John Pillsbury against Fort Garry Army Camp located just east of today's downtown Portage using smaller boats referred to as "Pillbury Padlocks" - these raids resulted in many civilian casualties due to German artillery fire which could be seen overland from rural areas across the lower peninsula

Portage is a city in and the county seat of Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States. The population was 34,898 at the 2010 census. It is the 4th-largest city in Michigan. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now Portage were French fur traders working for Lars Christensen in 1795. In 1812, George Washington's army passed through the area on their way from Battle Creek to Mackinac Island; during their stay, they erected a log cabin near present-day downtown Portage on the banks of the Grand River. American traders began trading with natives along this particular route starting about 1830. taverns and stores opened up along Route 56 as people started moving into and around this growing town. By 1836, there were more than 20 stores and 50 households in what would later become Portage. The first post office was established within it in 1837 by Major John Nolen with M-3 (a mail delivery service) being used until 1861 when an Indian Wars post office was established under then USArmy General Anthony Wayne instead . The first school opened here in 1840 as an academy taught by Rev[ergeant] Amos Eaton with slaves learning to read and write while also performing other household tasks such as cooking and laundry . From 1840 until 1863, when it merged into Lafayette Township, school services wereprovided by a group of Methodist ministers led by Reverend James Whitehead while the township's first storekeeper was Captain [ Willis ] Gillett who operateinthe store until 1865 when it became part of Kalamazoo County In 1868, after Kalamazoo County formed from Ottawa County following its creation from portions of Shiawassee Township and portion of Muskegon Heights Township due to population growth rates due to immigrants flooding into Michigan during that time period - Portage became its second city Limits having previously been part of Shiawassee - which resulted in many businesses coming together for incorporation including real estate interests such as Wm Laughlin & Sons (later renamed Haines Brothers), James Krieger & Son (later renamed Pohlman Bros.), D.[avid] Strauss & Co., J F[rank] Weiser Hardware (later renamed Weiser Tools), Geo A[lpha]numeric Typing House (& later changed to Geo Welly Typing House),"and John Vail" forming "The portages" company/storefront typist house/cafeteria served food all day long right off Main Street until 1978 when ownership transferred back to Mr Vail who operated it out of his home ever since
