Portage, Michigan is a small town in the state of Michigan. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wolverine metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Portage were men from Connecticut who crossed the Kawkawkee River in 1812 to start a new life west of Detroit. They named their settlement after General Anthony Wayne's victory over Native Americans at Battle of Fallen Timbers on October 13, 1813, in which they also lost many members including two-thirds of their original leadership. In 1834, John Fenton bought land east of present-day Portage and began farming it with his brother Isaac Fenton and others. In 1835 he married Martha Ann Goodrich and started having children with her. One daughter died young; another was born in 1839 but died before reaching adulthood because she was infected with tuberculosis during childhood and died soon after birth. Fenton became one of the largest farmers in that region and built up a large farm empire that included fields around present-day Lansing as well as much of western Michigan including Ottawa County and parts of today's Indiana and Illinois counties. He also developed significant business interests both within his own community as well as throughout West Michigan including shipbuilding, lumbering, manufacturing and ranching activities for years until his death in 1902 at age 87 from heart failure at his home on the banks of the Kawkawkee River near modern-day Brighton Township (now Muskegon Heights). withstanding Prohibition - The 1903 prohibition referendum failed by just 9 votes statewide due to organized efforts by businessmen within key Republican strongholds such as Lansing/Warren county to prevent any runoffs or free wine sales while ballots were being counted; however local bootleggers continued operating despite this ban

Portage is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Missinipi River. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from French portage meaning "paths leading to an opening." The first people to live in what is now Portage were the Ottawa and Potawatomi Indians. They built their several villages around what is now Old Portage Road and Whitefish Creek. By 1824, about 800 white settlers had arrived in what became Portage Township, but only a few dozen remained by 1840 when the township was organized into townships. In 1847, five miles west of present-day Portage along Whitefish Creek, General David Dixon founded Fort Dearborn which served as a military depot for Indian Wars fought between United States and Native American forces until 1865. He also built two other forts: One near present-day Lansing and one near Battle Creek. In 1881, George Wickersham bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of present-day Portage along the Missinipi River from James Byrne for $1 million dollars (). Wickersham named his new ranch "Portage" after his home town of Boston, Massachusetts where he had been born in 1849. After years of development work by local farmers and entrepreneurs alike, Wickersham's ranch became one of Michigan's most productive agricultural regions during the late 19th century and early 20th century due to its location on fertile soil that supported large cotton plantations as well as corn and other crops. In 1920, however, World War I interrupted industrial growth in Michigan; instead it led to stringent restrictions on farming that have persisted up to this day (see below). This period also saw significant changes within the local community with many residents moving away or leaving for better opportunities elsewhere during this time period (see history of Wayne County). By 1930 there were over 10 thousand people living inPortage Township (). However due to dwindling resources during World War II various industries closed down such as aluminum production at Alcoa plants north of Grand Rapids while textiles continued to be produced until they too ceased production in 1945 due primarily to market saturation caused by cheap knockoff versions being available online.. In 1950 however following passage of the Interstate Highway Act 507/508 it reopened several old aluminum smelters which led directly to increased economic activity throughout southwest Michigan particularly affecting downtown Detroit although some exported products still continue today including sheetmetal production from Flint MI
