Many businesses were established here during this time including J & S Lumber Company (now Allegheny Technologies), which manufactured tools and hardware for miners; Wm Hildebrandt Dry Goods Store (opened 1865); The Grosvenor House (1867), which served as a social club for local ladies; and The Dearborn Bank (1868). In 1907, Ernest Fenton organized a group of farmers who wanted to improve transportation through improvements to the Kalamazoo River crossing at Portage Heights near today's downtown Portage. This group later became known as the "PortAGE Improvement Association." They worked tirelessly over many years to create an improved crossing that allowed goods traffic on both sides of the river to move more efficiently and safely along modern roads; this ultimately led to increased business activity at both ends of the bridge. A streetcar line called "The Main Street Railway" was constructed from 1913-1921 by attorney Hiram Auerbach and his brother Julius Auerbach; it transported passengers up State Street from downtown Detroit eastward via University Avenue to Richfield Square where they could catch trains back home again or take excursions down State Street into neighboring towns such as Hollandale or Maystown. Local businesses frequently profited from passenger fares although some services were discontinued due to financial difficulties or construction delays caused by World War I hostilities outside Michigan specifically at Fort Wayne Army Ammunition Plant where munitions being produced needed no rail transport because they were distributed instead through trucks! harvest time was especially busy with locals taking advantage of opportunities available while supplies lasted!
