Portage is a small city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Michigan Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded in 1824 by fur traders and missionaries from Russia as a stop on their way to Christianity's new world in North America. The first settler was Nicholas Trimble, who arrived in 1826. In 1840, when Michigan became a state, Portage became its capital and largest city. In 1865, when the steamboat industry began to grow in Michigan, Portage became its principal port for exporting goods to Great Lakes ports. The engine that powered much of early American commerce and transportation came from the Portage River: lumbering boats used the river for docking and unloading; ferries took passengers upstream to Muskoka Springs before ferrying them back downriver; and wagon trains used the river's rapids for passage between Battle Creek Township (now Escanaba) and Sault Ste Marie (now Marquette). In 1830s–40s, there were many churches built in what is now downtown Portage: First Congregationalist (1830), Presbyterian (1835), Methodist Episcopal (1839), Baptist (1847), Lutheran (1848). A high school was built in 1850–51 as one of three schools founded by Reverend James Crossett within what is now downtown Portage; it merged with nearby Saginaw High School ca. 1870 into what is now Western Michigan University’s Kress Center Campus Quadrangle campus building complex also known as “Old Main." The first streetcar line ran through town on October 12th 1875 from Holland Park across Market Street Bridge to Superior Avenue near today's corner of Fulton Road/Bishop Road while still being called "Streetcar Line 1" until renamed "Portage-Lansing" on November 8th 1880 during newly formed Lansing City Directory which included only "Russell", "Holland Park", "Superior Avenue" & "Fulton Road". At this time all streetcars were operated by Lansing Municipal Railway company which would later become MTS Allstate Lines Incorporated with main line running south from Lansing east then northwest via State Route 9W towards Dearborn Heights then southeast along Ionia Rd until terminating at Brush Lake where it joined Big White Railroad just north of present day Harbor View Lumber Company lot across Wabash RIVER

Portage is a town in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights, MI Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settler in what is now Portage Township was Nicholas Brockway in 1827. He named it for John Porteus, an Englishman who had settled in that area one year earlier. The first post office was established in 1829 and was called Brockwayville. In 1838, a group of men from Ottawa County founded the village of Portage on the east side of the Penobscot River as a temporary stop on their way to hunting and fishing trips near Sault Ste Marie. The name "Portage" originated with this location. In 1842, George Washington Carver visited what is now Portage Township and recommended that farmers build a canal through present-day Maple Woods to carry water to Superior City from the Huron River southward. This idea was successful and led to further development of farming around Portage and elsewhere along the canal route. By 1865, over half a million acres (2,000 km²) were cultivated within present-day Michigan alone as a result of canalsIZ carried out by various entrepreneurs and governments throughout America during this era; these channels helped improve transportation and bring goods between large metropolitan areas and smaller towns or villages located along their routes
Portage, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and part of the Grand Rapids-Muskegon-Holland metropolitan area. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is located on the MI shoreline between Mackinac Island and Lake Superior. The first permanent settler in what is now Portage was David Ducharme in 1829. He built a cabin on a peninsula near present day Clinton Township and named it after his friend and fellow Frenchman, Pierre Chouteau. Chouteau had come to America in 1824 as an employee of John Fenton, governor of Michigan Territory. In 1830 he settled east of today's downtown, on land that he acquired from the government through purchase or gift. He founded what would become Portage as a community with himself as its first mayor, also serving as justice of the peace and treasurer for many years until his death in 1857. In 1835 Andrew Jackson won the Ulysses S Grant presidential election and became President; this event helped spur development within what would become Portage because many people saw opportunities for business growth under new leadership. As one result, local merchants began developing businesses along both Mackinac Island (now known as Muskegon County) dockside areas along Bay Street northward to White Harbor before turning inland towards present day Kalamazoo/Battle Creek although some trade occurred farther upriver at nearby Niles Landing due to easy access to water transportation then available only by boat or steamboat. During prohibition efforts during the 1920s much activity centered around smuggling alcohol from Canada into Ulysses S Grant National Forest but few things related directly to portaging took place since any goods entering or leaving these lands were automatically taxed at double normal rates resulting in an effective loss for industry owners which impacted families hardest due to job losses combined with high housing costs faced by workers unable to afford higher priced homes across rural communities while remaining employed outside city limits). However activities such as boating trips out into open water where products could be bought or sold illegally resumed during prohibition's end following ratification of Grover Cleveland's "Prohibition Act" which repealed all federal liquor laws including those governing portaging having an impact not just on local industries but also cross-border smuggling operations involving violence against law enforcement officers trying To suppress these activities especially given history precedent linking legalized alcohol with crime rates increasing exponentially throughout country.).
